The Hughes network is based on geostationary satellites like DirecTV and Dish's that orbit at 18,000 miles up. Latency, the time it takes for a signal to go up and then back down to/from a satellite is relatively long as a result, as much as a half a second. That makes internet use rather klunky.
The Amazon and other cloud satellite systems are in low earth orbits and as a result their latency is very low, maybe a few dozen milliseconds which makes it much more usable. Also I suspect antenna pointing accuracy requirements are a lot less than the Hughes system.
