Awning sun damage in 3 years

Perhaps it is a Denver thing, (mile high altitude) but my fairly new (2015) Vegas awning already has holes in it. (At the 8" area that is always exposed to the sun). If I could have chosen it, I would have preferred an awning that had a cover to protect this, but it wasn't offered on my unit.
Having seen my prior awnings fail, I have searched for others solutions.

I called Carefree of Colorado, asking if there was something I could cover it with. Their response was that if I did it would void the warranty. Well the warranty is now done.

I had tried the Eternabond solutions on a prior RV (It peeled off in 1 year), and had heard others painting over the surface, only to have the paint peel off.
After a search for what to paint over Vinyl, I ended up with "Vinyl Safe" paint from Sherwin-Williams that was lifetime guaranteed (Whatever that means). After washing with soap and scuffing with sandpaper, I put on their best primer, "Extreme Bond Primer" with a coat of "Resilience" on top, colored to match my unit. (Not dark brown to match the awning). I used a strong tape to give me a nice straight edge on the visible side.

The only issue so far is that the awning is stiffer, and when you go to extend the awning, I need to pull it out the first foot. I expect this will calm down as it ages.

I will keep you informed as to how this goes.
David

I have been worried about mine. I have been thinking Making a cover out of PVC pipe that I saw others do but the paint may work also. Thanks for the post!

Is this the sort of product that yo're looking for?

Awning sun damage

I did see the product you mention. It would take using a ladder to put it on or off. I wanted something that was less overhead than that. That solution would be good if my unit was stored or unused for a long period I guess. I wanted something that accomplished the same thing as the metal covers that are an option with some covers.

Any thoughts on plasti-dip? People do cars with it and it supposedly peels right if you want to change colors.

The Alumaguard awnings from carefree are the way to go if money is no object. I have an issue driving out of my countryside location to get to a main road. The trees and narrow roads are not RV friendly and I am occasionally hitting a tree branch that will eventually hurt my awning. Complaining to the township to trim the trees has not been fruitful.

I have an idea for you to consider:

If you only do this to the trees once: the local Government will get the message!

One year later:
The "Vinyl Safe" paint from Sherwin-Williams using "Extreme Bond Primer" with a coat of "Resilience" on top, colored to match my unit was a winner. No suggesting of peeling or damage. I think this is a winner.

David, question on your application. When you applied the paint, was the awning flat rolled out, or completely rolled up? Thanks Ed

Awning painting to protect.

Hi
When I painted it, I unrolled the awning about a foot, so that it would be mostly horizontal when I washed, primed, and painted it.
Note that the awning unrolling is stiff for the first foot the first year. I needed to encourage it to unroll if it was cold.
