Boondocking
Hope you are all doing well and staying safe! Generator question.... Thor Vegas 24 with an Onan 4000w generator .... can you really leave it running all night to keep the A/C on here in Florida while boondocking? Other than gas consumption, is it made for that? Thanks!

Yes, we do it frequently in our ACE.

yes, it is... it's simply a small engine turning a motor, to make 120v power... have fun.

Yes.
And
Your v10 uses 6/10ths of a gallon per hour.
It's OK to leave that running also if you need to.
10 hours running is six gallons of fuel at idle.
And
Make sure you have plenty of fuel when you leave that generator running.
It'll autoshutoff at a quarter tank(someone correct me if it's a third of a tank or some such).

Good info on V10 fuel consumption at idle
Regarding generator...1/4 tank (+/-) is the number that’s been discussed on this Forum.
Thank you.

Do we know what the generator, at load, uses per hour?
It might be close to the v10 consumption.
Which brings me back around to triple alternators and selling the generator, breaking sorta close to even and picking up a LOT of storage where that generator is.

With the gen. running all night, it may take a 6 pack or a couple of drinks to get any sleep if it is as loud as mine.

We put the dense paraparstitc or whatever it is almond ridgid foam with the aluminum skin, 2 inches thick under that bed over the generator and honestly, except for some vibration we have to acknowledge it's running instead of being perturbed by it running.

The sound from the generator is less bothersome than the heat of a night in a Texas rest stop in August. I barely hear the thing.

Generators are supposed to be exercised or run. We ran it while we traveled in our Axis to keep the air on during travel. We do the same with our current Newmar. Don’t buy a used motor home with no hours on the generator. Run it whenever you want.

Be sure you have a Carbon Monoxide detector. Usually, it is not recommended to run the generator while sleeping, you might not wake up.
Saw this in another thread. You may want to invest in a generator exhaust extension https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

rv generators are not 'exhausting' to within the rv, but to the outside air, so there is no 'danger'.... run it as often and long as you like. The 'genturi'-type exhaust pipes are more to keep your exhaust from another close-by camper, not because you have any concern for yourself. You see these sometimes in mass RVing rallies and at Nascar, etc.
Your RV also has it's own c02 and propane leak detectors built -in...

We've got a diesel generator; makes the gas-powered ones sound like they're just purring.

Many folks has died from running their generator while they are sleeping.
That exhaust can get in to the cabin many ways.

Since all of the modern RVs have carbon monoxide detectors built right in: I tend to agree that this is at best: some very old news...

yes, 'old school' philosophy was to keep a close eye on carbon monoxide from generators and vehicles running, while INDOORS, not while outside, which is where your generator exhausts to...
if this was any 'issue', the RV industry would be up in arms about it - but they are not, because it's a non-issue.
If you running your generator while parked inside your closed carport or garage, then by all means, be concerned, otherwise, no.
