battery broken

started having problems last fall with the house battery maintaining a charge. we had it plugged in for a weekend of camping drove it home and as soon as i shut off the truck the house battery died. talked to camping world about it but since it was fall we figured we would wait for spring. i took the battery today to our local garage to have it tested and was told it was physically broken . the mechanic said the only time he's seen one like that had been in a car accident . so what would cause a rv's house battery to break ? and has anyone heard of this happening ?

thanks in advance !

Possible the battery froze considering your northern location??
A charged battery will resist freezing far below the normal temps you would see (-70 degrees F range) but a discharged battery can freeze near 32 degrees. Freezing can crack the case... and might appear as 'broken' once thawed. It also could have spilled battery acid in the processes... in the battery compartment and whatever was under it...

Unfortunately waiting until spring may cost you. Had the battery been replaced when it did not hold a charge it may have been done under warranty. Now that the battery is broken (and it sounds like the case is broke) that is generally a sign of neglect (excessive discharge and freezing) or misuse (improper mounting) and will void any warranty.

If Camping World put "wait until spring" in writing on the battery warranty issue you may be able to get them to cover the cost of replacement. My guess is they did not commit to putting it in writing and if you talk to them they will not remember any such conversation but will be more than happy to sell you a replacement battery.

You may want to file this one in the "Live and Learn" folder.

A charged battery will have no issue with freezing in cold... Key is making sure it stays charged - wherever it is. A good disconnect (removing all load) and a good battery should have no issue thru a northern winter. I've never done more than check the voltage levels periodically. Haven't had to take one home to charge yet.
