my wife still asks every once in a while if she can do anything to help. Mostly she has learned to not even bother asking....my answer is always the same.
Take the kids and get out of the way.

That way, I don't have to worry about running over a kid, and she gets to relax on the picnic table, or on the bed inside, or get a snack, or whatever..... I can handle the backing in and positioning well enough on my own. .... and it keeps the peace.

Win win win

This particular image comes to mind after we move the camper.

For us this is a particular part of living this RV lifestyle we are still working on.

Here are some issues we have to get down anytime we back the camper up or line it in the spot correctly.

* Slide clearance
* Water bay door clearance
* Sewer Hose distance
* Electric/LP door opening clearance
* Line the camper up with the edge of the site
* Line the camper up with the entry door to a pad if available
* Ensure the 20' awning can be successfully deployed

Depending on the length of our stay we prioritize certain items over others. But we are still working on getting our hand signals down appropriately. Like, when she points left, she means "the rear of the coach should steer left", to me "turn the wheel left, which makes the rear of the coach go right".

Yeah but doesn't turning the wheel left, while backing up, make the rear of the coach go left?? [emoji848]

The one thing I find really valuable: get out and look. I will pull up next to the site and park it. All of us get out and walk around the site discussing where we want the RV. When we (ok usually just the wife and I--the son parks his rear somewhere and tries to play with his phone) all understand where the RV will be parked then I get back in and back up the RV. At that point then the wife simply has to point out obstacles and let me know if I'm turning enough.
That’s pretty much the same process we have, if there is a table that we want on a certain side, making sure there is clearance for everything. A lot of times they just sit or stand at a spot that I need to get the back tires to so we are clear. I can’t imagine backing up a 5th wheel. Coming back from our last trip we were at a gas station and there were two monster tow haulers next to us and just thought about all the places you could get stuck worrying about hieght clearance glad we went with the motorhome when we upgraded

We sat & watched a motorhome being escorted next to us, the wife jumps out with her walkie talkie & heads to the rear, the driver has his side window open discussing something with the escort, the wife is waving her arms & shouting into the w-t getting louder by the minute, the husband calmly ask the escort "would you mind going back there & telling her to turn her w-t on", thought we were going to fall out of our chairs laughing.
As for us the fights on every time we park. I hate to say this, but if my DW were bringing in planes onto an aircraft carrier ALL the planes would be in a pile at the bottom of the ocean. I NEVER have any idea of what she's signalimg, or trying to signal, I'm assuming the bugs are in her face. It's easier for me to keep getting in & out of the truck & park myself.
Someone mentioned being guided in with flashlights, oh! no way I'm coming in after dark & then trying to back in by flashlight.

That would depend: are you gripping the wheel at the top?

...or the bottom?

I guess I'm pretty fortunate. My wife will get out and basically watch to see if I'm going to hit anything, she will tell me. We have walkie talkies. Mainly because some places we camp don't have cell phone coverage. She points to which way the ass end has to go. Works for us!

I stand where Ron can see me in his side mirror .. we have our system going pretty well...I use my hand signals and he knows where I want him to go.
Biggest problem...in all the years the years he has been backing boats, trailers and motorhomes..once in a great while he will turn the wheels the wrong direction...then things can get a bit testy !

Either way the wheel still turns to the left, even if your hands are going to the right...

Depends whether or not you are backing in a trailer. Top of the wheel with no trailer, bottom of the wheel with a trailer. [emoji14]

If you've ever tried to watch (without laughing!), somebody try to push a rope uphill in the dark: that's about how I back up trailers...

Which is why a bought a motorhome!

what's with the dash knob I saw a commercial about... I think it was ford.... so you turn the knob instead of the steering wheel, while look at a picture from a camera
I don't get it....how is turning a knob easier than turning the steering wheel?

I think the idea is that you watch the rear view camera and it shows guidelines where the trailer will go based on how much you turn the knob--which is kind of silly because they could show you the same guidelines based on how you turn the steering wheel.

So glad to know we're not the only ones who put on a show for neighboring RV'ers when getting parked. Over the years, with our various RV's, we've tried it all, walkie-talkies, cell phones, hand signals, screaming, beating the sides of the RV, etc. In our case, DW has a knack for positioning herself in the blind spots where I can't see her in the mirrors or rear-view camera. And, like others, she invents different hand signals for each parking attempt. Although our Axis, at only 27 ft. should be fairly easy to park, we seem to be able to complicate the process in some way most of the time.
