How do you know it’s 5 degrees warmer under your black canopy? Did you measure temperature under identical weather conditions, at the same time of day, with the canopy in the same position relative to the sun, etc.? If you think about it, you are right that the canopy surface facing the sun will be hotter if the material is dark. However, polymeric materials are poor heat conductors so while the top surface will get hotter, the bottom will not get as hot. Additionally, any of the heat coming off the bottom of the canopy will quickly dissipate in the open air environment. So unless your face or top of your head is within inches of your canopy you are not going to see a difference.
