Will it clean the black water tank better if I close the black water tank blade after it's emptied and let the fresh water in the black water tank accumulate until more water in there while I am duming the gray water tank?

Thank you for the reply! Wasn’t sure if there was a certain amount of time you should let the “ flush” run.

Some of us do that. But you had better pay attention to how much you add to that black tank or it will be coming out the toilet & or the bathroom sink.

One of our Admins, EA, uses a water flow meter to keep track of how much H20 he adds to the tank. An Excellent idea! After I read that I ordered one for our rig! Even after over 35+ years RVng always learn something new on here.

Water flow meter!!! Learned something new here again. Thank you very much. Only during the gray water running, should not be a problem, but good reminder.

Don't mean to hijack this thread. Apology to the OP.

Have 2 in our rig. One for black/gray and one for drinking.

After we dump, nice to know we put in 3 gallons in both blacks.

Yes but know the size of your black tank and use a water flow meter. I explain the process in detail in a couple previous posts. My process using a water flow meter is:

The process I use
  1. Dump the black tank
  2. Run the tank flush for a minute or two with the black tank valve open
  3. Close the black tank valve and fill the tank to 1/3
  4. Open the valve and drain the black tank
  5. Close the black tank valve and fill the tank to 2/3
  6. Open the valve and drain the black tank
  7. Close the black tank valve and fill the tank to full minus 2 gallons
  8. Open the valve and drain the black tank
  9. Repeat if necessary

Add 1/4 cup of Dawn dishwashing soap and a capful of Calgon between steps 6 and 7 for a super clean and slick tank.

Using a second flow meter, I periodically flush the gray tank the same way.

I have 2 flow meters, a green one for black tank flush and a blue one for the fresh water hose. Purchased both on Amazon.

Note: since these photos were taken I added quick connects between the 90 degree elbows and the shut off valves on the water hoses.

I use the black tank flush to refill the black tank with the blade valve closed. I have found that letting it fill for 5 minutes fills the 40 gallon black tank about half to 2/3rds. Then open grey to drain. Close grey, dump black. The open black valve again and turn on flush to make sure water exiting is clear.

I was tought to leave about a gallon of water in the black tank to allow it to slosh while traveling.

Or
Install a tornado(or two) and run them as the tank is being emptied.
Flawless so far for me.

If you've been flushing your blank tank properly, your sensors should be working just fine. Therefore you can simply use your sensors on the control panel to tell you when the tank is roughly 1/3, 2/3 or full. This is NOT an exact science.

If you've ever crawled under your rig and noticed where the sensors are installed into the tanks, you'll notice that the uppermost one isn't actually at the top of the tank... but close.

So... nothing fancy needed. If you want to FILL your black tank when flushing, simply keep an eye on your little red panel indicator lights. As soon as the "full" light blinks on, either shut off the water or open the black tank drain valve.

Different strokes... but the key is to make sure the tank AND sensor probes are CLEAN of cling-ons. However much water you use is up to you... if you're not doing it properly your sensors will soon be clogged with gunk and stop working.

After your tank and sensors are sparkling clean, It's VERY important to prep your tank for use by adding several gallons of water and appropriate detergent as previously posted.

Do you add a holding tank treatment as well or does the Dawn and Calgon take its place?

"tank & sensors sparkling clean" That one gave me a chuckle Nomad Never thought I would hear sparkling clean in reference to a black tank

Do not add a tank treatment when using Calgon. Some of the treatments such as TST will start to foam up when combined with Calgon. I know this from experience when both were put in the toilet bowl at the same time.

Dawn and Calgon is enough. No treatment used most times.

Iíve used happy camper in the black tank. If you leave the black valve closed until it needs dumped( I leave grey closed as well). Flush it out well until water runs clear. Then run 3 full toilet bowls in. Iíve never had an issue with blockage or smell. But a lot of folks on other forums do the dawn & Calgon thing. Some donít put paper in the toilet. Some donít poop in the toilet. Some donít use it for anything. To each their own.
