A/C Generator

Quick question. Is is OK to have the A/C units preset, and when needed they would automatically be turned on with the start up of the generator. We would do this when we are driving, as it became hot, from the dashboard switch. There is a 45 second delay from the time the generator starts to when it comes on line. My thinking is that it would just be like turning the units on, or am I wrong, and it may be too much of a surge?

I've done it numerous times and haven't had a problem.

I recently had a software upgrade on my Sprinter Citation and it did not pass the smog test because the computer information was wiped clean. The dealer said I just need to drive it a while. Does anyone know how far I need to drive to get enough information to pass the retest?

Usually the OBD-II drive cycle test clears after driving various roads. The test looks for all kinds of different driving conditions (highway, stop and go, etc.). It will automatically clear once the different conditions have been seen. Since it is looking for various road conditions its difficult to pinpoint a mileage when it clears--it all depends on where and how you drive it.

We drive like this all the time. Set the A/C and then use the generator to turn it on or off.

Thanks Jamie, two A/C wouldn't be too much of a surge?

Well if the generator is sized for running both I would suspect that would work fine but we don't have a 50A RV so I cannot answer definitively.

I have a 5500KW generator and run both AC units while traveling. Again, no issues to date.

Like my coach, I imagine your generator is sized to handle the load of both AC units as well as the fridge and micro running.

As a side note, running both AC units gives the generator a nice workout for its periodic running under load.
