The round vent serves two purposes. Being directly below the fan allows more air to be pushed out in a direct path, the sliding vents on each end require the air to make a 90 degree turn in a small space. Even with the round vent installed there is still significant air flow from each sliding vent. Second, the round vent rotates and allows the air to be directed where it is needed, such as when cooking or seated at the dinette.
At night I usually shut off the rear AC, run just the front, and use the rotating vent to direct air to the bedroom.
