Devil's Tower

After almost a full year of off/on planning, we took a month-long road trip this summer, touring the upper Midwest.

Here's the view from our site of at Chimney Rock Pioneer Crossing on June 20. The winds were absolutely crazy that night and I unfortunately only planned a single night there, so we didn't put anything out nor had enough time to explore:

Here's a view of our site near Devil's Tower, WY. These were from June 21 and 22, to be specific.

A view of Devil's Tower from our site:

And just for a bit of symmetry/balance, a view of our site FROM Devil's Tower. Our site/rig is just about smack-dab in the middle of both photos.

Same as the above, zoomed in quite a bit. It's surprising my phone was able to make out that much detail at that distance.

Details
I managed to score a full month off this year. My wife is a teacher, so she shares almost the exact same schedule as the kids, so we left when both were done for the school year. The entire trip was 30 days (from June 14 through July 14), 4600 miles, 10 new states/campgrounds, hundreds of photos and lots of memories my teenage boys will grudgingly admit were fun and will likely decide was actually very cool in a decade or so. Starting and ending in northern VA (just outside of DC), we hit the following locations/highlights:
  • St. Louis, MO - Gateway Arch National Park, Zoo
  • Des Moines, IA - Mostly a nostalgia tour since I grew up near there.
  • Bayard, NE - Chimney Rock National Monument, Carhenge
  • Devil's Tower, WY - Devils Tower N.M.
  • Custer, SD - Mt. Rushmore N.M., Badland N.M., Jewel Cave, Cave of the Winds
  • Bismarck, ND - Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park
  • Park Rapids, MN - Itasca State Park and Mississippi headwaters
  • Wisconsin Dells, WI - Dells touristy stuff, cheese, 4th of July fireworks
  • St. Ignace, MI - Mackinac Island, Mackinaw bridge
  • Dayton, OH - Wright Brothers, Air Force Museum

(Thanks for @JamieGeek for pointing out the Google Photos links not working. I swear I tested them out in an incognito window before posting. Too bad I can't go back and delete or edit the original post.)

Our most recent trip was a Harvest Host adventure on an ostrich ranch in Robbins NC. in addition to giant dinosaur birds, we shared the pasture with cows, horses as well as at least one LARGE pig and a small alpaca. Daisy Dawg was very confused by early morning visitors to the campsite.

Looks like a great place to visit. The wife saw "horses" mentioned, so it got moved up the to do list.
I sent you a PM about your RV as we are looking at a 2016 Windsport 27K as a potential replacement for our 2016 Vegas 24.1 next year (warranty runs out in May) and I have some questions about the Windsport.
Safe Travels.

Recent visit to Zion NP, Watchman CG. All 5 of the Utah National Parks are beautiful and majestic. Difficult to pick a favorite.

Trust me, they will appreciate it one day. Similar story here - 6 people 2 dogs and a cat. Guess what I'm doing now? Traveling the country in a RV. Yup, full timing it. They'll look back on your adventure with a smile. They're just too young to realize just how lucky they were that you are in a position to safely and comfortably (relatively) take them to places they may have not otherwise see.

If you enjoyed the AF museum, try to make it to PIMA in Tucson, AZ on one of your trips. Just go in the spring or fall or you'll bake. It's where the boneyard is: https://pimaair.org/

Here is a shot of our rig just after we got it. Tucked into the hangar where it lives when not in use, and one on our hill.......

Very cool! Is that an “original” Cub? My flight instructor had one and he let me fly it once. I absolutely loved it.

This is our 23TR during a very wet trip to our sons future home site in Oregon. 17 acres overlooking the Willamette Valley in Oregon. I have plans of many trips up here to camp but this time it just rained too hard.
