Do it all the time with our Axis. No issues, no fires, no CO poisoning. I make sure that the exhaust pipes (don't forget to run the genny) are poking out from underneath the cover before starting either engine.
In addition, I'll often step out of the camper while the engines are running.
So far the CO detector hasn't peeped, and the cover is fine.
