How many miles do you like to drive each day? I'm accustomed to driving 10 hrs or more a day to get to my destinations. Now that I'm retired I'm trying to adapt to a more leisurely pace!
Just curious to know how you guys approach your trips, especially if you have no time restraints.

We average about 450. Most so far is 580.

I've learned to look at the driving HOURS, not the miles... sitting in a seat can only be tolerated for so long until it's time to kick back...

sforl - rare for us to drive more than 5 hours in a day. One of the perks of being retired is not being in a hurry to get there. The journey truly has become our destination and we travel about 8 months each year. Just our way of rolling.

We did an 11,00 mile loop a couple years ago. Did about 400 one day and we thought that was too much. Another day we did 46 miles.....saw a campgrounds that looked interesting and stopped. It was one of the best places we saw the entire trip.

Four to five hours per day. Found that the older I get, the less hours I can handle per day. In my 20's and 30's, 10-15 hours per day was the norm. Can't discuss this with my grown up children as that gives them another avenue to mock their "old" parents.

We use the 4:00 pm rule. Somewhere between 3:00 and 4:00 pm we pick a destination within a couple hours drive, call ahead for reservations, set the GPS, then cruise on in for the night. The goal is to be wheels down and flaps up by 6:00 pm so we can eat, walk the dog, relax and unwind before catching some shut eye.

When we first retired an older gentleman explained to us the 2+2+2 travel plan, travel 200 miles, stop by 2pm, stay 2 days & we tried it & it's very leisurely way to travel.

Sadly, I am always in a hurry. Maybe now I will spend more time between points, rather than rushing from point to point. In the past, I have always traveled with a bumper pull. I always factored in time to get off the highway and in a campsite. Now, with the Thor 24SR there will be less pressure to plan stops and I suspect the wife will spend more time looking for side trips and places to visit knowing we can also spend the night at a rest stop. Now instead of trying to get quickly from A to B, let's hope a more natural life-cycle.

I used to be in a hurry but now that m retired I'm willfully slowing down. On a recent 4,000 mile trip we discovered that 300 or so miles per day is "about right". Plus I want to build a day or two off each week. I'm not quite slowed down to the 2+2+2 yet but I understand it!

Yeah being a working stiff we're limited to where and when we go.

I usually try to plan accordingly because the family doesn't like the long drives. Thus for trips that are 6-10 hours we'll break that up into two days. Although we have had a few trips that were 20+ hours and we did those in 2 days--it really depends on the destination and how long we have.

Really can't wait when time is a luxury and not a precious limited resource.

Wrapping up our first trip tomorrow - will be around 6000 miles over 171 days. 300 miles per day has been my marker. That's around 5.5 hours including a fuel stop, and it allows for unexpected delays, like traffic (or today's 35 mph crosswind/headwind across Kansas).

Four to five hundred miles is my goal. Especially when we are using camp grounds. I prefer Early In Early Out.

We just arrived at Redwoods National Park from Florida. 3252 miles in eight days so we averaged about 400 per day. No big rush but we didn't do much sightseeing along the way either. One short side trip through the Petrified Forest was about all. One day we did 504 and that was our longest day.
I tell people I want to smell the flowers along the way because I'll have plenty of time to look at the roots later on.

I drive from Whiteville VA to Orlando FL every spring - tired at the end of that leg!

Hello 6 hours is good 8hours is a bit much. No hurries No worries!

For us, it varies by the purpose and time restraints of the trip.We seem to average about 50 miles per hour on the road, counting stops for fuel, food and exercise. Easy days are about 6 hours, or 300 miles. We try to stop beyond bigger cities.
Some trips require that we be planners, and some trips allow us to be wanderers. Retirement won't necessarily change you from being a planner to being a wanderer, the choice is yours!
