In a crowded area like NJ, avoiding tolls probably means stop and go traffic on surface streets. That kind of driving will decrease your fuel mileage and increase your drive time. Probably be cheaper and easier to pay the tolls. Are you avoiding the bridge to avoid a toll or like me, don't like going over big high bridges? You could probably cut over into PA to avoid the bridge your talking about.

Go West to Scranton, and take 81 South to Roanoke, Va.
Then pick up 95...
Easy-peasey!

295 south, then cross on the Commodore Barry, and take 95 south. That doesn't avoid all tolls though. To avoid a bridge toll I suppose you could cross on the Betsy Ross, which I don't think has a toll, but then you'd be going through Philly proper on 95. Not recommended.

I'm usually going SE of Philly and cross on the Commodore Barry, or sometimes the Walt Whitman. The Commodore Barry is easier as the WW (and the Ben Franklin) both have hard turns on the Philly side.

New Jersey: You can get in for free, but you have to pay to get back out!

95 doesn’t go into Roanoke. Have to take 64 from Staunton to Richmond then get 95.

Once you get to,Roanoke: the path to 95 is pretty obvious.

301 to I95 north of Richmond (Carmel Church) is better. Also cheapest gas there at Loves and Pilot.

301 through Richmond to connect between Richmond and Petersburg is a nightmare.

US 460, most logical is a nightmare going through Roanoke. Poorly marked causing missed turns highly congested areas. Drove that route in the auto a hundred times but wouldn’t dream of taking the RV through. And I know the turns. The daughter lived just South of Roanoke for 7 years.

The other interstate connections below Roanoke would add time and miles to the trip.

Why go further West to come back East. For interstate connections from I81 use I64. Can even bypass downtown Richmond by using 288 from Richmond/Short Pump to I95.

Sorry I meant 301 to 295 bypass around Richmond or i95 north of Richmond turn at Fort A.P. Hill then 295 around Richmond.

I would go to Pa. Get on 81S to 66 in VA . Take 66 to 17 to 95. It's easier than it looks. I've done this route several times from Florida to Pa. and back. Pretty country highway thru Va.

Being from NJ you should know there is no way to leave without paying, LOL

Departing from South Jersey, the Delaware Twin Bridge is the better crossing. Follow 95 south to Exit 1A (last exit beforeToll) for 896 south to 301. (Note: the south bound 1A exit is immediately after the overpass, not before)

Many of us use the 301 due to propane prohibited through Ft Henry tunnel in Baltimore.

Follow 301 into Virginia to 207 then 95 north of Richmond. I support 295 around Richmond.
The only tolls are leaving NJ, and 301 leaving Maryland.

There is a large Walmart in LaPlata, Md for boonedocking. You'll need a rest from traffic through Waldorf, Md

To avoid NJTpk take 130 to 295. 295 to Delaware Twin Bridges. 95 through and south of Phila into Delaware is a bitch.
