Food & Import Declaration returning to US from Canada

My wife and I will be driving our Class C RV back home, across the border from Canada into the US. What experience have you had with food you are bringing back, and needing to match the food to what is legal to bring? Do you really need to match our food to their list, and get rid of what is NOT allowed?

I have to admit, I never thought about this! 5 years ago, we drove from the US, thru western Canada, into Alaska. I don't think they asked any questions other than alcohol. Have things changed that much?

We just finished our 21 say trip to Alberta. On the way back, the US CBP asked me if we are bringing in any fruit, vegetables or fresh meat. We did not bring back any, so my answer was "No Officer".

He also asked if we are bringing in any alcohol or tobacco products. I said "Negative officer".

At the end, he told me "Come one now. You must be bringing something back". My response was "Yes we are. But not foods. Just souvenirs like T-shirt, coffee mugs and sticker". He said "Welcome Back".

We recently (2 weeks ago) cane back into the US from NB into Maine. He asked the usual questions, then asked if we had any oranges. We said yes, we just bought a bag full at Walmart in NB. He came into the coach and took our oranges, threw them in his garbage can and said welcome back.
They took our oranges on the last trip back into the US a few years ago. It made the Missus very unhappy. Maybe next time we will remember.

Me too

I returned from BC and got the full justice treatment, had to pull over and exit vehicle. They went through everything and threw out an un opened bag of rice, two tomatoes and all of our oranges. Ha! Took about 30 minutes. I would have gladly chucked it all in the can if iI knew it would save me half an hour.
