G.P.S. Recommendations
Well it’s time for a new GPS, the expensive Rand McNally with its lifetime map update, has not offered an update in the past year. The fine print on their site says they reserve the right to stop the updates. Appreciate any recommendations from folks who have other name GPS’s. Thank you

Garmin Dezl 770. AWESOME GPS. I update it every 6 months. I heard that You need to do it at least once a year (365 days) or you lose the lifetime update. But not sure if that is true.

Any Android tablet and Google maps.
10 inch screen, iexit, rv parky, camera apps, radarnow, Android auto, windy and 1,000's of useful things.
Or any burner phone if you don't want a big screen.
Having a stand alone GPS unit is like having a land-line.
Some people just insist on it, but you can't pin them down as to why.

Sure you can:
Can input RV height, weight, and width info for routing
Can input other preferences like route for quickest time or shortest difference or no tolls
Don't have to deal with "offline" maps when traveling areas without cell service
Can easily find RV related destinations on RV targeted GPS units
I'm sure there's many more.
But in reality, any routing input is just that - a single input. most of us use Google Maps/Waze AND stand-alone GPS AND some even have paper maps and exit guides. To rely on any single input blindly is not smart.

Sygic maps allows all of those vehicle inputs. It also let's you input custom worded alarms for rail crossings and museums and 100 other things within a certain circle of distance you select. Antique stores close by tells me 'antiques' instead of a ding or sound.
There's a small pond(called 'tanks' out here) not far outside of Moab.
I mostly knew it was there from old old books and surveys and recollections. It had been there since about the 1850's.
It took 5 road maps, three programs, and paper usgs maps from the 1920's to find it.
I found it, GPS marked it but still haven't dived it.
You're right, one map is like shopping at Walmart. You get only what Walmart wants you to have.
The map programs in the pictures along with Sygic rv and Google maps(and the most excellent Torque overlay) are always available or running in our 24.1.
Some of the programs shown have 50 different map types available. Topo, usgs, satellite, thermal, vegetation density, hunting sections, private, state, blm, restricted land boundaries with owner Information and sometimes the phone number as overlay for the private lands.
And programs like rv parky and Boondockers and harvest hosts and pilot have their own overlays which aren't available on a standalone GPS.
In the expeditionary little blazer I have multiple year usgs maps and hand drawn maps running. 1920 through the 1980's. Some towns and mines pop up in 1920 and are dead and gone on The 1923 map....
The custom map program let's you scan in paper maps, set two GPS coordinates and then it fills in the rest allowing your paper map to follow you on your screen like Google maps does.

Hi Suenmike. Before you spend the money on a new GPS, check out CoPilot. It runs on a tablet (iPad) or smart phone and has all the cool and necessary perks you would expect from an application designed for motor home travel.
Here is a link.
