Garmin GPS update 3 hours

FYI, if you have a Garmin RV GPS check for a map update. Update the unit before hitting the road. I updated my RV770 last night and the map update took 3 hours. There was no system update this go around.

As a note the last update I ran was January.

Yep... sometimes updates take forever!! About a month before the travel season starts for us, I plug the Garmin into an internet connected computer at home and run updates. Then, about a week before the first trip I do it again... and occasionally during the season at "home base".

Nothing smells as fresh as up to date mapping software...

Yup. Just ran my update too before we hit the road for our big spring trip. Did take several hours. Now if it will actually take us where we wan to go without a few side "adventures." Will keep the paper Rand Mcnally handy for sure.

Imagine how much quicker it would be if their server fed you the update file at a reasonable download speed? Updating mine right now on my 150 Mbs cable connection and the file is only coming at 1.5 Mbs. 50% complete and another hour to go.

Can't they just fax you the updated the maps; so you can save data off your data plan?

My doctor still uses FAX. Why? Because it's "secure".

I'll tell you WHY it's secure... because NOBODY uses FAX anymore!! (I actually told them that)

Last year at the last minute, last day before our medical benefits would expire, I learned that my Wife was not covered with our vision plan because they suddenly needed 2 forms of proof of marriage Same employer for 15 years!!! They had a website to upload the documents. I tried all day and all night and the server would always time out Then I saw a fax number Our printer is wireless nowhere near a phone line but I gave it a try. Moved the printer & connected to our VOIP land line and presto it went through the 1st try

I bet a lot of people lost out on benefits trying to get into that server. Now that I have T Mobile Internet, I can bring my MagicJack with me and have Home Landline in RV. I just need to get a smaller wireless printer so I can send / receive faxes

dk... don't forget the free web based fax services... limited, but for one or two pages every so often - easy peasy. Just print to PDF, then send. Easier than a Garmin update!

Thanks for the heads up. I just connected. 8.2GB I will time how long as it it is deleting all of the existing maps. That may be a good thing. I started 7:45PM CDT so will see how long.

Glad to be able to do, when it is not needed. I like the Garmin so far. Still use Waze but both are great.

Update: Took about 40 minutes.

I hope the Garmin Connect issues are fixed. What a PITA, but when it works it is fabulous.

I saw a map update was available about 2 weeks ago but that the east time was 3 hours. Waited until today and there was also a software update. Started the update and then went to dinner. It was finished when we go back home.

Good to know. Nice that they seem to do the big updates before the season starts
