Doesn’t “speculation” involve a lot of guessing and risk taking by definition, particularly when applied to investing or trying to make money by timing markets?

I would speculate that affect on RV prices will be in middle between your position and taylorbob1’s. I do believe a lot of new Covid owners will be dissatisfied with the RV life and will try to unload their motorhomes and trailers, but many won’t be able to when they realize how upside down they are on their loans.

Also, while there may be a lot of first-time owners who want to get out of RVing next year, as a total number of RV owners, they are still a small number, so I don’t expect them to move the needle much anyway. Other factors we can’t even predict at this time may have larger affect on RV values next year.

What hasn’t been discussed above (at least that I’ve seen) is the impact that the growth in rentals will have. Younger people seem to prefer renting over buying more so than our generation, but the Covid experience may end up slowing the growth in RV rental business. Or not. I can see pros and cons to both sides of the “rental” argument.

I personally delayed buying last year as I had hoped because Covid made it impossible for me to travel (for other reasons), plus my football tailgating season was cancelled. I’m not certain what will happen with Covid before next fall, but if the right compact motorhome comes along at reasonable price, I will buy it to be ready for tailgating and camping next Fall just in case everything gets back to normal. And normal for me goes beyond Covid itself.

One other huge factor is the amount of seasoned RV's out there

Many will go to the salvage as replacement units are available

Next year will be interesting hopefully and nothing more

I have only seen about three Axis 24.1 models advertised for sale on RVT in the past few months. None was a 2016 24.1 Axis like mine. This model with the extra wide twin beds in back is very popular Just wondering what was the asking price of the units you saw ? Thanks. I want to sell mine and buy a trailer/small 5th wheel so I don't have to pull a toad anymore. Happy travels in 2021.

Today 2021 new 24.1 is listed at 85k on rvt, just the same+- as a 2018 was 2018.

Ignore the advs with high prices.
GENERALLY, private party that high is because they're buried and dealer that high is so for $40 more per month they can flip people to a new unit.

A used 24.1 listed at a STUPID high price is a good way to flip someone to new, and maybe bigger.
A high mile beat to crap used 24.1 on the lot at a high price is even better.

The dealer can give you any amount you ask for on a trade in.
It's just tacked onto the new vehicle. You lose because of sales tax in some states by doing that, but hey, you're the one who owes or wants $8,000 more for your trade-in

Less than prudent people have the mortgage or rent money they haven't been paying. It's burning a down payment sized hole in their gypsy traveler dream pocket.

The price of an rv being paramount makes for some really strong hate down the line.
Buy what you want when you want and the guy next to you shouldn't matter.
Make your own happy.

Who is to say that most of those new RVers will not love their RVs and keep them?

The RV companies and dealerships are making money hand-over-fist right now, and they may all decide to limit production to keep sales and profits high.

Prices may just stay high. Home prices went sky high some years ago and never really dropped back down to where they used to be. People said that the high price of homes would limit sales and thus drive the prices down, but that did not turn out to be correct.

Higher prices are going to mean higher taxes for those States that have some kind of property tax on RVs. If the prices stay high, as they may, tag prices will also probably go up.

If the airlines do not recover people will find themselves having to find other ways to take vacations, and that might drive RV sales even higher, along with RV prices.

Or people may find they don't like RVing and the market may collapse. I just don't think the future is that clear yet.

Apparently things are even crazier with Class B vans. Thor's newSequence/Tellaro offer a pretty competitive price in comparison with others, but the demand is so high that quality suffers. I just retired at 60. I am looking for a B van but I am going to wait a few years. It will be interesting what Hymer US will come up with.

But who knows, really? If you read this forum last April most everyone was predicting that the RV market would tank in 2020 because so many people were thrown out of work. Massive layoffs in the industry etc. if you own an RV and you like it just enjoy it! I’m personally sort of worried about finding sites with so many new RVs out there. But we’ll do the best we can.

I think the bigger problem will be getting sites this year: most people that bought a new RV most likely didn’t buy it right before the season unless they were already looking. That means they didn’t get to use it much and they probably still have the bug. So maybe 2022 will be when there is a sell off if any: I think now that people are use to working remotely a lot of employers are going to continue that tend as it’s a way to cut expenses: as such a lot of people might want to travel and work remotely thus opening up a whole new cohort of buyers.

The only reason repos aren't higher is there's little space to store them and the new repo rules are a bit gray.
(and a bank bail out will cover losses of unpaid money making a repo a complication. It's a hedged bet)

I haven't the blind faith in people.
I do have numerically based and prior history type thoughts.

My bet, based on many years of experience, is 25%(insert a number so high here you physically snort, then add half and you'll maybe still be low) of those who recently purchased a rv on a knee jerk have no intention of Making a 13th payment unless it OVERWHELMINGLY benefits them.
They won't say such, they might not even have manifested the thought... Consciously....
If they did it on their home during the last little debacle, imagine what they'll do with the rv the first time the reg comes due....

My concern as well. We are spur of the moment travelers. Now we’re having to book 6 and 8 months ahead of time. No longer can I say, “ Let’s go to XYZ for a few days” on Wednesday, and take off on Thursday.

One thing we probably all agree on is were facing the biggest change and challenges to ever happen in the RV world the next few years

I think most if not all of what has been brought up will happen

The order and magnitude it happens will skew everything

Creating money based on a computer generating bonds you have to buy internally since you can't sell them will impact us all

Inflation is a double edged sword so you better be careful how you grab it

Population is still going up despite media reporting gloom and doom

Today the only smart to do is try to live each day to the fullest, watch less news, enjoy your family and friends, and eat well

What happens the next few years is unpredictable due to the uncharted territory

Just parked the Tuscany in the shop after a Trip West and going to head back out in a few weeks

Paid on average 25% more for Diesel than on the fall trip

Open camp grounds were very slow

Some cafes busy and others not

Different experience for sure but getting on the road is always fun and the roads and stops were very busy

I70 was almost bumper to bumper in some stretches so folks were on the move

Didn't see a lot of RV's but definitely some out there

Right...my point exactly. I'd like to see figures on new RV slots built vs. RVs sold. RVing is not easy and many of these people will give it up over a period of time....setting up, tearing down, caring for your ride, upkeep, etc etc will drive many away. Salesmen did what they always have done, only more so this year.....accent the positives, and forget to mention the negatives.,,they are your best friends until you drive off the lot, when they have already forgotten your name.
