Hot water tank question

Should the water pump be left with power on if you want the hot water tank to have power or gas heat on.

I wasn't sure if you needed constant pressure either from City water or pump and fresh water tank.

This question is for the six gallon tank...

You only need it on if you are not on city water, although there may be times that city water isn't very powerful so you will want to use it with city water but not necessary.

Yes you need water pressure before you light or power the water heater. How much pressure is up to you and the DW. Most of us live with 25 psi if not showering. With a shower I like at least 50 psi. If the campground connection is not supplying that much, I turn-on the coach's water pump. I turn it off when finished showering. Just make sure the water's tank is completely full before turning on power to the water heater. I usually turn the electricity to the water heater on as soon as I have hooked to campground utilities and bled the air out of the system.

Thanks! I figured I needed pressure to light the tank, just wanted to make sure. Still a newbie here.

I was under the impression that the water heater always had water left in it- thus why you have to drain for maintenance or winterize. If this is the case why does it need pressure to start? Obviously you need pressure to utilize.

That's what I understood as well. There is water in there if previously used unless you drain it.

Typically the entire water system will have water in it (including the 6, or 9 gallons in the heater) all the time.

The only time there wouldn't be water in the system is if you blow out the lines for winter storage (otherwise you'll have antifreeze in the system but not the heater--you don't want to pay for 6 or 9 gallons of antifreeze).

There SHOULD always be water in the system unless you drained it... but of course Murphy is resident in our RV's - and could have been a leak that drained water... (those drain plugs NEVER leak... right??)

Safest approach is make sure you have water at the hot water faucet before turning on the water heater...

When filling the hot water tank, is there a Best procedure to bleed the air from the system?

Simplest is open at least one faucet until the tank fills and water comes out (let the air bubble out)... go to each hot water faucet and run until steady stream to purge rest of air.

I guess I have to be different. I always drain my hot water tank if the coach is not going to be used for a while. I replaced the plastic plug with a boiler drain. I just open it and T&P valve when I park it for a couple weeks. If we have been out west for a month or more you won't believe the sediment that comes out. Another reason to carry a water softener.

I run a 5 micron filter on city water to keep crud out of the water lines, I've seen the filter turn BROWN in just a couple of days.
