This may not be the best time to do so because of the current high demand for RVs; the Axis/Vegas basically is not even available where we live due to the demand and so we might have to buy out of state. There are some Thor dealers locally to do service, but no Axis/Vegas models available for display or sale.

People tell me that the single largest and supposed best out of state location for Winnebago RVs is Lichtsinn's RV in Iowa and I was wondering if there was a single largest and best Thor dealer that would be good to contact when we decide. I know there are a lot of multi-location dealerships for Thor, General RV being the one I know of best, but is there one best for out of state buyers? A place with god service able to do installs and upgrades on a newly purchased RV? And if so, who?
Look. At this late time of year (September) just stop looking. All the dealers have pumped their prices up and are even selling used RV's at well above actual NADA value. Don't feed their greed. The only reason the market is tight now is because all the manufacturers closed their plants for some months during the covid pandemic and they are still slow due to loss of workers returning in favor of high free extra unemployment payments from the government. As the "free" expires by the end of the year they will all want their jobs back. Dealers will all tell you business is booming and it is, but only because the same number of shoppers are now looking for less available new units due to those production shutdowns. What 3 months shopping on the internet across the country has shown me is there is an absolute glut of used units for sale. Many I have seen for months. Dealers are creative by putting their units on different ad avenues to kind of rotate advertising markets to reach more people with their target ad. You are better off attending one of the major RV shows this Winter and ordering your new RV while at the show. They will give you the best deal you will ever see at a show if you know how to negotiate.

I suggest you go on rv trader and see the dealers listing the model you want for sale. The dealer sites will usually show in stock, sale pending and on order. Motor home specialists in Alvarado, tx says they are the largest motor home dealer in the country. We bought the last Vegas 27.7 they had in stock in June. I don't know what they have in stock now.

My recent similar experience

Hi AJMike,
We are in a similar situation as you:
  • One year of research
  • Decided on a Thor model. Had specific criteria in mind.
  • Few local options. We knew we were going to have to look out of state.
When the economy tanked in March we saw prices on lot models drop significantly. When the boomerang effect hit in May, prices shot up, and inventory was sucked up immediately.
I tracked all the RVTrader advertised rigs on a spreadsheet for about six months, and only came across one or two that had what we wanted. We decided to go with a factory build as we were not seeing our exact model available as a lot model.
We wanted to try to keep our dollars local, so I connected with three regional dealers for a spec build. I also contacted MHSRV, a small dealer in Valdosta, GA and RVOne in Tampa. We started contacting in early August and placed the order last Friday. Here's where things fell in:
$174,000 - MSRP
$130,000 - Best deals I saw advertised that closely matched what I was looking for.
$145,000 - Average price I got from the three local dealers
$130,000 - MHSRV's inital quote
$120,000 - MHSRV's lowest offer
$110,000 - RVOne. (No offer to lower the price, but since I did my homework, I knew this was pretty much rock bottom. Easy-going process with the seller and finance. Up to this point, I have nothing but good to say about RVOne.
A RV friend that I've connected with got the exact same model with almost the same options at around $101,000 two months earlier in June.

Eight to ten weeks ETA on the build. They will ship it to their lot in Iowa, which is closest to me.

It was a no brainer.

Motorhome Specialists in Texas

AJMike, I’m not sure if this helps but yes, MHSRV, Motorhome Specialists in Alvarado, TX is the largest and we bought our class C from there with the best deal anywhere close to us (north of Dallas). I wanted to let you know that their website does show the RVs they have on lot, on order and being delivered and you can buy any of them online regardless of where you are located! Also, since they are the biggest dealer, they can actually order one specifically for you and get them faster! As for service, you can go to the Thor website to find out where the nearest Thor authorized repair center is to you or anywhere’s else. Hopes this helps.

I have had absolutely terrible service from general rv. They are very quick to sell you a unit but good luck getting it serviced. You will have to wait months for service and this was pre-covid

Actually Donny (MHSRV CEO) has about 7 to 10 of the best selling Thor MC on order for each month's delivery. They order all their Thor MC coaches in December for the model year. If you decide on a special order, Donny just put in an order change for a scheduled delivery and it will arrive in two to three weeks. That is about the only way to get double pane windows on a plant 750 coach.

Camping World in Dover FL had six new ones in March 2020.

(We’ve got a 2016 Axis 25.1 with 49000 miles in case you might be interested.)

Agree. We purchased our Thor Windsport at MHSRV in Alvarado Texas. Got a great deal. Sales department is great, but Service department is, well, they recommend a couple of mobile RV service guys for anything except delivery prep.

Find a local dealer you are comfortable with and then find the vehicle on line. Ask your local dealer if they can procure it for you at a price you can negotiate with them. Be sure to do your homework on what you are willing to pay before asking if they can accommodate you. I did this with my 2016 ACE and it worked out for everyone.

MHSRV Purchase

Hi Yall, I purchased my 1st motorhome (2019 leftover Axis 25.6) from MHSRV Oct 2019. The price was my only reason to fly to Dallas, have them pick me up at the airport, then stay overnite in the motorhome I was buying. Seamless. The small issues discovered in our inspection were addressed IMMEDIATELY (they don't ask for your check until you're ready). Drove the Axis back home to Houston. My local Authorized Thor Dealer is 15 miles away, and treats me like any other service customer. Life is good. EddieA PS. when the plush MHSRV van made its airport pickup, all 3 of us couples were long distance: Denver, Montreal, Houston.
