MPG question Thor Hurticane 35C

Just did some calculations out of curiosity. 2016 Thor Hurricane 35C with Ford V10. Calculated mileage over the last 2600 miles and came out at 6.57mpg. How does this compare? Also if I begin towing a toad (2015 F150 - 4600lbs.) what decrease do you think I will see?

Jim - too funny. We have a Challenger 37TB and an Explorer (4500 lbs). We get about the same. Up hill, down hill - doesn't really change much over the course of 2600 miles. I would imagine that we'd save probably 1 - 1.5 mpg without the Explorer but that won't happen. So 6.5-7 mpg is where we stay. The too funny is I used to keep track but after the first 20k miles, I quit tracking it. Sometimes it got as high as 7.5 mpg - mostly downhill with a following wind. Then flat with a headwind, 5.5 - 6.5 mpg. So I use the few minutes I spent checking my tires.

Enjoy as I am sure you do.

We get closer to 7 mpg in our 2016 Hurricane 35C towing a Jeep Cherokee most of the time. This is an average for just over 15,000 miles of travel (since April 2016) but mostly travel in the Northeast and to the Midwest a few times. Not much mountain travel.

Goodness gracious, where are all the claims of 10-11 mpg!
With the Ford V-10 in a class c and now the Axis my best mileage has been in the Axis 25.2 while towing our CR=V. When brand new we got between 8 and 9 mpg. With 7000 miles it now delivers 9-9.5mpg. We always tow. Our old class c, 26 feet, Ford V-10 never got better than 8 and sometimes as little as 6.
One thing has changed. I used to worry about the cost of gas, how maybe I could improve mileage by driving differently. Now I don't concern myself with it, just go. I have found one way to ease my mind and that is to realize that my pension fund and IRA contain oil company stocks. So, win win.

Big difference between F-53 based motorhomes (Hurricane, ACE, et al) and our E-Series based ones (Axis, Vegas, Class C's). The F-53's are a lot heavier and hence lower mileage.

On our Axis we're in the 8-9 range pretty much all the time, towing or not.

Yes, big difference in weight. I am suspicious of the 9.5 number I'm getting but lovely wife, mother of my children, keeper of the peace and counter of the coin, calculates every purchase. It was consistent on our Michigan trip and I was quite surprised. I will never, ever suggest this to her but I believe it to be closer to 8 most of the time.
Friends with the F-53 joke that their mileage drops to 5-6 on the way home when going to the barn fever strikes.

Guess mine really sucks. 6,625 miles and I have averaged 6.48. Sometimes towing, sometimes not.

I find that there are two possibilities on this thread.

1. The degree of honesty is amazing and welcome.

2. The math skills demonstrated are appalling.

I prefer to believe that #1 is the case. I've been on other forums where everyone but me regularly gets at least 10 and most of the time 11 with the occasional 12 thrown in for good measure. All of this while towing of course. Yes, gas. Yes V-10. Only thing I can figure is they have found routes that are down hill both ways with a strong tail wind.

Well since our parents always said they had to walk to/from school many miles in bad weather and uphill both ways - there must be a 'downhill both ways' alternative...

I drove F350 pickups with the V10 with only a 26 gallon tank at work & stopped in every town I went through to fill up so I was sure I could get home. If I said they got 8 mpg I'd be bragging, if towing a 10k trailer they got 4 to 6 mpg. They are very thirsty.

You guys make an excellent case for owning something smaller.

12 MPG for a small Class A sounds good to me.

Owning smaller is okay if that's what you want. We knew what we wanted and mpg was a small factor. Livability and room for grandkids was the most important to us. So that is what we bought and would buy again. LOVE IT.

Was just kidding. 6 MPG is fine if that's what you want.

For what it's worth, it's not the V10's fault when it has to move over 20,000 pounds and over 100 square feet of frontal area. Add a little speed and 6 MPG sounds impressive.

I put 188,000 miles on my 1968 UltraVan and average 15.1 mpg generally cruising at 60 mph. The 22 ft, all aluminum class A coach weighs 3,500 lbs empty. As for the 18,000 lb Hurricane, the best mileage was 8.4 mpg driving 55-60 mph on Interstates; not towing. The worst was 6.4 mpg wandering through the Canadian Rockies again not towing. Generally it gets about 7.2 mpg towing (including lots of A/C) at 56-60 mph.

The V10 certainly cannot sip fuel but for a gasser it is a beast - very reliable and has pulled some serious grades with the Explorer toad through Rockies heading into Yellowstone. Following Route 16 west to 10 Sleep, Wyoming was the best test it passed with flying colors. We thought that grade was going on forever - curve after curve of going up. The Tow/Haul on the way back down into 10 Sleep was just as helpful. I'll bet if it got 4 MPG going up, it would have been reason for celebration.

Just saying.

No one has mentioned the obvious: higher highway speeds=lower mpg.

When we were in Calif 2 summers ago, posted speed limit was 55 mph for our RV. Gas mileage went up to a little over 7 mpg. However in a hilly state (not mountainous), I drive at about 67 MPH. It is the speed where my cruise and engine work best together. Relative to safety though, space is always my major consideration.

It comes down to simple math. Bigben's 4 MPG guess isn't unrealistic at all. If anything it's too high for large motorhomes going up steep grades.

Any gasoline engine will need to burn approximately 20 gallons per hour of fuel to make 300 HP; more or less -- engines vary just a little.

So whether you have a V10, Hemi, 5.0 V8 or EcoBoost for that matter, if your rig is large enough to only go uphill at say 40 MPH while using 300 HP, you'll be getting +/- 2 MPG.

(40 miles/hour) / (20 gallons/hour) = 2 miles/gallon.

I'm sure than on really steep hills like we have in Texas, some large rigs may only get about 1 MPG while climbing at 20 MPH or so.
