Low profile AC

Looking for some comparison info on the low profile AC units.
Years back "they" claimed the low profile was much nosier then the regular unit. Especially in the coach. Also more prone to icing/freezing up. Anybody know if this is true?
Are they as efficient as the standard unit?

How much shorter are they?

I just measured the unit up on top of my rig, and it was 14" tall.

I've seen some low-profile units that were only 9.5"

I saw a cool modification on increasing air flow from the back of the AC cover. Clearly it has restrictions with the vents. Very poor design...that mid dramaticly reduces heat build up in the vent and gives more cooling inside the coach. When I get out of my cast I'll be on the roof modding my account cover, for sure ..

Lloyd, Our new unit has two low profiles on it. Hard to tell as both are better ducted than the last on. Have not had any freeze up that I am aware of. I would have seen the high humity and temps. Going Out next week end come join us.

You missed it. You need to look at the back side where the AC vents out hot air. It is in most cases restricted by large plastic supports. They recommend you cut the entire back out, less two in the center for support and replace with a mesh type screen so almost no restrictions are present. It increases the AC's ability to discharge heat. Go to You Tube and watch for yourself...

my two are the low profile 'Penquin' variety, and I've had no issues with either in over 4 years and 85,000 miles. You may 'hear' a lot of things when it comes to RVing... you can probably throw out 99%.

The Mach 8 HP is 8.25" tall. Having three electric motors it makes about the same noise as as my MACH 15 when both are on high cool. However, Mach 8 HP is much quieter on low. In fact, with just the fan on low, you can barely hear the fan. When the compressor and condenser fan start, it it makes about the 1/2 the noise of the Mach 15 on low. That is why a Mach 8 HP have it in the bedroom.
