Thor axis 24.1 using a Honda Generator?

Would I be able to use a
Honda EU2000i generator to run the 1 air conditioner?
If I only use 1 appliance at a time? Click image for larger version

I tried it on a Travel trailer I use to own. Start up load was too much and it tripped the gen out. Was going to try the easy start up kit on the air conditioner but sold the unit for the coach I now own

Would probably work if you added a soft start to your A/C. I have one on our Axis and I can run the A/C off a 15A residential plug.

Would that be something the RV dealer installs?

That generator is rated at 13.3 Amps AC continuously but will surge to a much higher current so it depends on what size your Air Conditioner is.

If a 15,000 BTU model the answer is NO.
If a 13,500 BTU unit the answer is MAYBE if NO OTHER LOADS exist including the fridge and battery charger (converter).

I have started 15K units with mine but it trips out on overcurrent after a few minutes.

I have seen them run 13.5K units with no other loads.

Depends on your skillset: If you're good at following directions, can handle some 120V re-wiring, and don't mind climbing on the roof then you can do it.

Don't remember how long it took me, but wasn't that long, an hour or two. I was prepared with all kinds of wire fasteners along with the ones they sell you, some extra wire ties, etc.

I would imagine that a dealer or tech would likely charge about two hours of work for the job.

Here’s a link to Amazon for the $219 Soft Start unit.
In the product description it specifically discusses use for starting with a Honda 2000

“The SoftStartRV smooths-out the startup power demand of the A/C compressor. A small lightweight generator, like a Honda EU2000i, can’t handle that power spike - until now. The SoftStartRV reduces compressor startup power demand by up to 70%. So your A/C starts every time. No more hauling around a big, heavy generator”

Simple answer...NO. You need two of them running parallel or go to a bigger portable like the Champion 3100 or 3400...or any other make that puts out over 3K watts continuous.

The 2000 watt generator is too small. I suggest the Predator 3500i from Harbor Freight. I have one and it is as good, if not better than the Honda 3000i that I sold with our travel trailer. It runs the AC in our Windsport with power to spare.

We tried the same thing but as stated it would not handel the start surge. We purchased another 2k and was great to power everything. Better to pickup and handel 2 generator's that a 3k or bigger.

Had the same problem with tripping as others.

I installed the Microair Easystart 364 on the 13.5K BTU A/C. I now run the AC and converter on a single generator in Florida summers without tripping, using the Yamaha equivalent generator.

I am just wondering why wouldn't you use the on-board generator? Seems to me s an unnecessary expense to buy another generator and the soft start up kit others mentioned.

Weight, cost, maintenance, and fuel storage were all things I didn't want to deal with on a coach installed generator. My Redwood 36RL is already pin heavy. Putting a genertor there will only compound the problem.

Besides, if a Yamaha portable goes out, I just replace it with a trip to a dealer.

I get what you are saying because as far as I know most travel trailer do not have onboard generators making an external unit necessary unless you have shore power.

The OP has a Class A RV with an onboard generator, hence my question.

Our 2016 Axis 24.3 onboard Onan 4k overheats and shuts down at times, our back-up EU200i powers the 13 5 btu ac just fine.

Yes and no. Issue is the startup load. I used my Honda 2000i to successfully run the 13.5 ac in my old travel trailer once I installed a hard start capacitor (about $11 at Amazon) vs the easy start kit listed in another reply for $200+.

Did you install it in parallel with the existing start capacitor?

I followed the instructions with the kit:
Two wire hard start kits are connected in parallel with the run capacitor for
Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) type compressors

That doesn't sound right. Changing the capacitance of the starting capacitor gives you more torque to start the motor. Changing the capacitance of the run capacitor changes the magnetic field angle of the auxiliary winding causing a stuttering rotating magnetic field.
