A "Messy" Question...

... So I've got this sewer line running from my house...
I was hoping to be able to pop open the access port, and dump my sewer caddy into it. When I dug it up: this is what I found:

Can anybody give me an idea as to how this top removes?

Thanks!

If the cap doesn't unscrew I'd call a sewer clean out company, rotorooter. For a small fee I'd bet they would open it and if needed put an extension and new cap on for you

I had the city put a clean out installed by the house when they fixed the sewer line running to the street. Only used it once but was nice to have

It sure doesn't unscrew...
Thanks for the advice about calling in the Marines. I'd hate to make an interesting situation worse!

with all that annotation on that "cap" I'd say that belongs to the city side of the line so you probably can't legally use it anyway even if you could open it.
I'd agree - call in a plumbing expert,

That's a strange one. We have two of the below PVC fittings, one about 6' out from the house and the other 8' from the street. They sit flush with the ground. Both are about 10' from the driveway. On both of them, the cap is installed upside down so that square protrusion doesn't get lopped off by the lawnmower. Don't ask me how I know.

New York City did pay to put the system in our Town...
(They also annexed lots of our properties, when they built the reservoir system... )
If it's on my property: I'll treat it as if I own it.

I wonder if that lid pops up? Have you tried to pry up with a long screw driver or crow bar. I would not force it but perhaps it will pop up and off for you?

Bob, Take care when you call the plumber. What you want to ask for is a clean out....not a dump station. Most cities won't let you put a dump station in your yard

I did try that... but there's nothing to "grab" onto. That cap is tapered down into the bigger mess beneath it...

I've got a plumber that I've known for thirty years... I can tell him the truth, and then we get our stories straight!
Our Town has no regulation about this sort of thing.
It's just an unincorporated Hamlet...

There are 4 bolts that hold that cap on and are on the underside of the oval tabs on the corners. You will probably have to cut them off, look corroded from being buried. I think they do that to prevent excessive dumping and over whelming their system. Also to prevent people from dumping things into the sewer that will kill off their waste breakdown bugs at the plant, like motor oil, antifreeze, etc. I have seen similar caps on small bore sewer systems, but I don't think this should cause a problem for you.

Let us know what you plumbing friend finds

Just remember when working with sewer lines,

I'm pretty sure there's a Bldg code standard that a cleanout is required. I'd think that would be a standard everywhere..but don't know for sure

If you know where the pipe leaves the perimeter of your house...where it comes out form under your foundation. look there.

I've found all of that: I now just need to massage it into a useful form...

I believe that is a ductile iron mechanical joint - C153 would lead me to think that. The cap is held on by T bolts and you are seeing the T on top of the cap in your picture. Dig down a little more and you should find the hex nuts. They did this so folks like us couldn’t get into the system and do nasty stuff like Skip 500 mentioned.

We've got a rainy day here, so I'm letting Mother Nature wash the dirt off of the parts in question. It looks as if Saturday will be the "Day Of Reckoning"...)

Please send another picture when the rain cleans of the top and you can see all of the lettering. I’m thinking this might be a brazed cap.
