Most Popular RV Parks

I’m sure the seasoned RV owners out there know which Parks they have run into that require significant advanced reservations. I’m hoping to benefit from your experience and wisdom.

With a motorhome over 40’ you already narrow the field of possible places to stay. State parks are almost always too small.

Is there a resource out there that helps a newbie understand which RV Parks need to be the focus of serious long term planning - website, book, etc? If you have only on shot in a geographic area it would be nice to know where to spend your limit far in advance planning efforts. Ideas? Thank you!

The Fort Wilderness Campground at WDW (Of course!)
The Lake George RV Park.

These two parks always need to be called VERY early on in the trip planning.

We usually start planning for next year the day after labor day and start making reservations from then until Jan or Feb. This usually puts us ahead enough in most cases to be able to get in (our small size helps out there too).

Exceptions being popular places at popular times (e.g. holidays, WDW Ft. Wilderness over the Christmas break, etc.).

If you were just trying to "wing it on the fly" calling around at the last minute you may find a cancellation or two that can let you sneak in.

A few others that may get filled as being popular:
Normandy Farms, Foxboro, MA
Mt. Rushmore KOA and Palmer Gulch Resort

A good resource is RV Park Reviews many of the reviewers leave comments about how difficult it is to reserve there.

(Note that RV Park Reviews is run by the same people that run the Thor Forums here.)

We've traveled the last 10 years & unless we were headed to a popular summer vacation destination (which we tried to avoid) I called a day or 2 in advance & so far have always been accommodated. Usually tried to arrive on Weds or Thurs & stay through the weekend so we weren't trying to get a spot on Fri or Sat, you can nearly always get in on Sun, Mon, or Tues just about everywhere. The popular spots, if your able, plan to go before schools are out, say late May or after schools start, about the 1st of Sept, the weather is usually nice both of those times & usually not as crowded.

Re your question “Is there a resource out there that helps a newbie understand which RV Parks need to be the focus of serious long term planning - website, book, etc?...”
I mostly use Good Sam RV Travel and Savings Guide. (Formerly Woodalls). It used to be published as separate additions by region but now it is one large (and hard to handle) book. Has campground ratings and prices though.
Lots of electronic sites:

Topsail State Park near Destin Florida. One year advance reservations suggested.

If your planning a snow bird trip during the winter, most snow bird parks worth staying at require at least a reservation a year or more in advance & some, especially in Florida, are VERY expensive.
