Mountain driving

This may sound elementary to some but never having driven an RV in the mountains before I want to make sure, for the safety of all, that I understand proper gear selection. I have a 2017 Vegas with the 6 speed Automatic transmission. My question: is there a preferable gear for descending hills on mountain roads?

Use the tow/haul feature on the end of the gear shift lever which will downshift each time you tap the brake. Simply take it out of tow/haul to resume normal shifting.
I have the 5 speed but the 6 speed should work the same.
Hope this helps.

Tow/Haul feature is great it will guide you down any incline with ease. Took me a few times to get use to it but I love it. I also run cruise on flat land but as I approach a steep hill/mountain I take off cruise and accelerate slowly into the steep hill. Works for me to avoid the loud downshift going up.

I do the same thing with cruise.

I have heard the six speed transmission is not working with the tow function. Please check and see if yours is indeed downshifting when in tow and you tap the brake.

6 speed transmission

We took our Axis to Midway Ford in K.C. (truck center) to have our transmission checked. The tow/haul works great. However, we had an issue when returning from Florida mid July ... coming through city traffic...stop and start...it was shuddering/slipping going from 2nd to 3rd.
The techs at Midway were very good to work with. They told us they put it on the OBD/Scanner and found no issues. Checked all fluid level/color .. all was good. He drove it and found no issues (which Ron did not experience driving it over Sunday morning..yes they are open 7-7 Sat & Sun)
The tech said ... all was good and if we experienced the issue again give them a call.
Soooo we shall see !
