Too loud or quieter are all subjective.

A dosimeter should be used to quantify what is being too loud and how far it is being measured from the source.

I measured the sound of my 5500 about two years ago and it was quieter than my ACs running on the roof. I don't have that data but I do have my sound meter. It also was quieter than my portable pure sine wave inverter generator that is enclosed. By far the loudest device I have is my 6 gal Bostich Compressor. It was so loud compared to my 5500 I bought a new Makita compressor that runs at 58 decibels.

My brother's class B has a propane generator and it well over 100 db. He cfan never use it as it is just too loud

I found the solution for my loud Onan 4k generator. Before I start it up I break out my Bostitch pancake compressor. Then no one can hear the generator...
