Our solution to the rusty bumper sewer hose storage

Anyone who has stored a sewer hose in the square bumper on the back of their RV knows what the inside of that bumper can do to the hose. The least of which is coat the hose with an ugly layer of rust and over time moving around in that rusty bumper can wear a hole in the hose. On the outside that bumper may appear pristine with a nice coat of paint but on the inside it is just bare metal. It will usually start to rust before the RV reaches the dealer. This past week we took our new motorhome out for the first time after getting it home. Arriving at the campsite we were not happy when we pulled our nice new sewer hose out of that rusty bumper. We are not new to the 3 inch sewer hose but for the past 13 years have been using a Sanicon system with the small hose that stored in the service bay. We have downsized and reverted back to the 3 inch hose. We recall installing 4 inch square PVC fence posts on previous RV’s to avoid the rusty bumper. One of the reasons we purchased the Quantum JM31 was because it was low to the ground and did not have troublesome electric steps to worry about. Ingress/egress is easy without staining my wife’s ankles so raising the coach is not an option. Because the coach is so low to the ground under the coach sewer hose storage is not practical. We decided to line the bottom of the bumper with a material that would not rust. For years we carried a roll of 1/8 inch thick rubber sheet that could be rolled out when working under the motorhome while away from home. We cut a 3.75 inch strip off that roll and slid it into the bumper. We hope that will do the trick.

I wonder if the inside of the bumper could be coated with truck bedliner spray?

actually seems like e decent idea that mat liner. Is that shower pan liner perhaps?
I coated the inside of ours with rust converter and it lasted perhaps a couple of years, then I re coated but probably didn't do quite as good of a job the 2nd go around..... it needs attention again. I sure do wish they used a larger size tubing to increase options...such as lining it with a PVC fence post.
I do worry a bit about putting something inside though since the water will get under it and then be even slower to dry but I think I might give it a try.

Buy a length of pvc gutter and a couple of end caps from Home Depot or Lowe’s. Slides in and out easily.

Done correctly the gutter can double as the sewer hose support from RV to sewer connection

I do not like the idea of storing the slinky in the RV compartment.

We are somewhat limited in our options with the 28Z,

Why not mount a hose caddy under the RV?

Yep! I have two pieces that nest/slide together that I use as a support as needed.

Our unit is very low to the ground and one of the reasons we purchased it. Don't think something mounted underneath would survive our driveway.

We used a 5” pvc fence post (from a fence company and it came in the same shade of beige as the RV) and riveted end caps and latches on both ends. We strapped it to the outside of the post with metal straps. It drains out onto the ground and can be rinsed out if needed. It is large enough to hold the elbow connectors and two lengths of hose.

Looks like the gutters are inserted into PVC fence posts, with caps. Am I correct?

Plastic bin

I store my sewer hose and elbow in a plastic bin with cover in my outside storage area. No rust, no fuss. I have a hose that has seal caps that go on both ends so haven’t had any problem with smell.

Painted mine with Rustoleum

Shortly after bringing our Freedom Elite home, I painted the inside of the rear bumper with Rustoleum.

Home Depot, or Lowes have in the paint department small paint rollers with foam roller covers that are 3" long and 1" diameter. The roller handle is threaded for an extension pole.

I rolled Rustoleum on the four interior surfaces of the bumper tube, reaching in to the center from each end, with the roller handle on the extension pole.

Applied multiple coats, over a couple of days.

Done in 2015, and no noticeable rust in 2021.

Yep - caps on both ends makes it easy to slide the hose in and out.

I went with the 5” plastic fence post too. No room underneath,so I cut it in half and mounted it to the back bumper.
No problems so far. Click image for larger version
