Question Questions or Concerns to Ask Dealer When Buying Used

We just found a used 2017 Thor (Chateau?) Citation 24ST we are interested in.
This is our first Class C, or driving RV purchase.

What questions or concerns should we be sure to ask the dealer, or that we should look for? I haven't had much time to read a lot about potential problems, as we just found it and are driving 8 hours tomorrow to go look at it.

Many thanks for any help!

If they have any maintenance records that would be great. The biggest problem with the coaches is water damage. So any visible signs, inspect the seals, look or smell for mold.

Also, ask them to hookup to h2o. Make sure no leaks. Hot water works. Fridge cools. Furnace works. Toilet seals not dried out. No nasty mold &mildew around windows, inside & out. Slides in and out sound smooth, not bumpy. No dry rot cracks in tires. Feel the lap sealant areas to make sure they aren’t rock hard. From other threads on this forum, closely inspect the cab over era. It sounds as though that’s where a lot of leaks happen.

Try and go on the roof and look at the seams/joints. Look for cracks in the sealant that need attention. Check out the two coach/house batteries as well as the chassis battery. They may need to be replaced. The tires are an important issue. Not just the wear but are they dry sun damaged. Try out every system/slide(s) to be sure they all work properly. Sit in all of the seats/table area. Look under the bed(s) for any form of mold/damage. Ask for any and all repair records. Look at the oil and transmission fluid for wear/unusual smells/colors.

Buying used can get you a deal on an RV that has had the bugs worked out already.
But... you have to be extra careful.
Have the dealer hook it up and show you that every system works as it should.
Look for evidence of water intrusion. Look for patching on the roof, in the walls, and in the storage compartments. Drive it, and look for any wonky handling traits.
Be on the lookout for leaky pipe fittings...
Good luck, and happy shopping!

Looks like all the above advice pretty much covers everything. I'll only add to make sure YOU understand how to operate everything and where water pump is located and how to winterize.

Unless financing is needed, through a source you don't have personal access to, why a dealer?
The reason sure cant be due to trust and their overall unstained reputations....

In my state dealer sales are taxed and private party isn't.
That's a 10% premium.

I would hire a professional to inspect it if you want to buy it. Costs a few hundred but could save you thousands in repairs.

Follow up and let us know how it worked out. Was the RV good, the price right and did you buy it? If so did you find any issues (which I would consider normal, no matter if you buy new or used).

I'm a little late responding, but better late than never!

We did purchase the used RV, and are now excited to be a 2015 Thor Citation 24ST owner! Ready to hit the road!

Had a bit of confusion regarding the listed year: the dealer had it as 2017, but it actually was a 2015. Of course that dropped the price a lot, so we got it just below NADA low book. (I hope that's a decent price) Low miles.
My husband spent 6 hours at dealer going through everything that was suggested on my question about what to look for buying used. (very helpful!)

Interior and exterior in great shape, and everything seemed to work properly. Did not see any signs of leaks, water damage, etc.. A handful of small fix-its the dealer took care of. They gave us a 3 month warranty and 1 year roadside assistance. Found maintenance records through CarFax.
They had a driving sensor (?) replaced, which seems to be a common problem with the Sprinter Van chassis.

Now we have a handful of things we'd like to customize/change, so will be posting questions soon!

Thanks again for the help, look forward to joining this fun "campsite" and maybe sharing some of our own ideas down the road
