Recommended wind speed for awning closure

We’re looking at forecasted 8-18 mph wind over the next couple of days.

At what speed is it recommended that we shut the awnings?

The side awning is about 8 by 18’ and the rear patio is about 8 by 9.

We would just close them but the forecast is for rain and we’d like to be able to be outside a bit...

You're going to get answers all over the place because it depends on the size and type of awning along with the design.

Before I had an awning that would close automatically, I would close if continual wind speeds were over 10mph or gusts of 15MPH or more were possible.

Even with the automatic awning now, I would rather be safe than sorry. I still close it if I am not around to monitor conditions using the same guidelines as above.

Some people use bungy cord at the end of the arms to help keep their awnings in place in a stiff breeze.

I am always pretty nervous about wind, rain, and our awning...
At anything other than just a gentle breeze: we pull ours in.
For the record: it does have a wind detector feature that will close it automatically. The problem is: MY wind detector is much more hyperactive!
Better to be safe; than sorry...
Good luck!

I’m with Bob. Our awning has a wind sensor - and it even has adjustable sensitivity - but I’m cautious anyway. Pretty much keep it rolled up unless we actually are sitting under it. It’s just such a huge “sail” hanging on a fiberglass sheet with a couple of sheet metal screws. Not worth the risk.

Only sensor I have is what is called "the pucker factor".

If the wind starts blowing really hard, have awning deployed, and start worrying about "what if" - the "pucker factor" kicks in and the awning gets rolled up.

That makes sense. We'll leave them rolled unless we’re sitting under them. And roll them up with any wind...

That's a wise course of action!
And I hope that the weather co-operates, and you get to enjoy some time outdoors!

We live in our RV 4 months seasonal. Awning is out 24/7 tied down. 4 years no no problem.

That’s the way we’ve done it for years. I believe wind sensors cause folks to take a risk and a failure will not be identified until it is too late

I probably error on the side of excess caution, but regardless of wind speed, if the awning starts moving around, I will close it, at least part way. I never leave it out if we are gone and can't be there to watch and monitor. As far as wind speed sensors that will automatically close the awning, they can and do fail. I have seen many awnings wrapped across the roof of an RV, because of a sudden wind gust. I do everything possible to make sure mine is not one of them.
