RV sharing

What do you guys think about renting your RV out? I was looking at a website that helps do that, but I wanted to get some input.

I would be very leery of renting out my RV. I rent out a house and can tell you that no one takes care of things the way you do.

Absolutely not! Not even to my best friends! Too many opportunities for Murphy to raise his ugly head!

I wouldn't. What a headache it would be.

LOL yeah I asked a similar question ("Would you loan your RV to a friend?") and still the overwhelming answer in the forums here was NO!.

Which I can understand and have now also fallen on the no side of the question.

Just think about the times you rent a car, or stay in a hotel and something happens "it isn't mine...I'll let them fix it" now think about someone using your RV and that happening. Especially considering how long the dealer took to walk you through how everything works on the RV..are you willing to do that with every renter? Do you trust the RV rental management to do that? no?

If you are going to even consider going that route then I would start by calling your insurance carrier that has your RV policy and talking to them. You may find some companies may refuse to insure your RV if you rent it out.

Probably the only situation I could imagine ever renting out my RV would be if and when I was ever unable to continue to use it, and I was unable to sale it.

I will post on the other side of the issue.... I currently have been renting mine out for 9 months and so far my total cost of ownership has been $0 (including insurance, payment, storage and repairs). I am not saying that it hasn't had its share of headaches, but I also have it consigned thru a small business owner that has been taking a good job of the issues. With two children and a busy life I could not rationalize the costs per year for pure ownership, and my wife feels that it is still "ours" which was never the case when we were renting. I also derive pleasure from getting some of my friends (approx 25% of my rentals) involved in the RV lifestyle... I hope that maybe some day they own as well so we can go on adventures together. If you have any further questions please PM me and I can answer any other questions.

I could never do that. I'm way too particular about how things are done, and taken care of. IMO if I had to rent it out to be able to afford it, I would conclude I couldn't afford to own one.

Not what you asked, but if you don't need full time ownership, why not be a renter yourself instead?

We've rented in the past and it's worked out OK. It's not the same as owning (which we have also), but there are advantages -- along with inconveniences -- to renting.

We travel/tour a lot, so prefer owning compact MHs. When we treated parents or other family members to trips with us, we rented larger RVs for extra space. It's expensive for sure (particularly mileage charges if driving long distances), but in long run it's not that bad compared to owning a motorhome that only gets used a few times a year.

There has been a lot written lately about the growth in RV rentals. Like most here, I wouldn't rent out a personal RV, but would certainly consider not owning one at all and renting as needed.

I think we signed the paperwork for the loan there was a section in about NOT being allowed to rent it use for commerical use. But if its paid off you are of course allowed anything you want.

A member commented that it was not rational not to rent since he didn't use his RV as much as he wanted. This goes into the conversation I have had with friends who ask me about the cost of owning a RV vs. renting a hotel room, renting a car, eating in restaurants, etc.. My answer is that financially speaking, owning a RV makes no logical sense at all. I knew that when we bought it and live with it. I want to travel the open road while I can. Now, that said, I know of one couple that jumped in to the RV life a bit prematurely with their careers and family causing them severe travel restrictions. They basically signed their Super C over to a rental company to offset the costs of their loan. Makes me kind of sad just to think about it. I would sell mine before I would rent it out.

Absolutely positively undeniably no way in a million years, if by a VERY VERY slim chance I did consider it the renter would be much better off buying it as the rent & non returnable deposit would be astronomical.
