Sales People

To all who read this: Dealers are sales people. Almost, not all, sales persons will tell you what you want to here. Ya it get 40mpg towing a 5k pound toed even though it has a 2k hitch up a 12% grade at 70mph. Take what they say with a grain of salt. Do your do diligence and investigate via forms to ask people with real life experience.

I venture a guess that most RV salespeople have never slept in any rv, never towed or driven one as far as around the block & know nothing about the operation of one other than what they've read or been rehearsed to say.
They have but one objective.........SELL SOMETHING!
Is what they sell right for your needs, wants or abilities? I'm sure they don't know or care as long as you buy something.
On other forums about towables there's new folk's posting daily that have been sold a TT/5th wheel that they don't have near enough vehicle to be towing with due to "the salespeople said I have more than enough vehicle to tow that XXXX lb trailer, I'd never know it was back there!".

I have seen both kinds- those that are full of BS and those who know there stuff.

If I am really depending on the sales guy to tell me the straight stuff, I will walk away when I learn he is dissembling (big word for lying). Sometimes I don't care, I know much more about the product than he does and sometimes his BS is fun to listen to and then ignore.

But don't ever try to tell a salesman his is full of it. Just walk away.

Conversely,
Sheep
Are for shearing.

In this day and age of instant information by merely asking into the wind and a voice from a $19 hockey puck or from the thing in your pocket you do not call your mom often enough from, or your video display showing you 1,000 video choices, answers back to you on a fraction of a second based on myriad sources and experiences:

Consumers,
consume thyself with advanced fact or be consumed by your fault.

There isn't a culture in the ENTIRE world saying to trust any word from any vehicle sales person, ever ever.

Horse sellers prior
Ox sellers prior prior
Wooly Mammoth sellers prior prior prior.
Never, not even as a joke, Never at anytime in the history of the world.

(For those of you in a certain occupational grouping:
'But SUSAN researched it'....)

1st...make sure their name isn't hand written on their business card. 2nd...before ever going near the RV you're interested in, ask them questions about it such as, what are the holding tank volumes, what model and size generator does it have, what's the fuel tank volume and ask a few specific questions about the brand of slide mechanism, appliances and mostly...what's the curb weight and towing capacity. If they don't know these basics then ask for another salesperson that's a bit more knowledgeable about this particular RV. You don't have to do business with them just because it was their turn on the next "up" that walks through the door. Ask them how long they've been doing this and "what's your personal experience operating or owning an RV?". Go to the dealer during their slowest periods and maybe you'll get a more experienced sales person. Most important...know the answer to all of these questions before you ever ask. It's hilarious how fast they fall when you keep correcting them on everything. Don't feel bad asking the Sales Manager for another more knowledgeable sales person. This is a big purchase and a lot of money. Most of them are just in training for their next career position as a buy-here-pay-here used car "sales expert".

Cool

The sales person you deal with this week may have been selling washing machines last week.

Ask him/her several questions that you already know the factual answer to and see what their answer reveals about their knowledge of the merchandise.

I've encountered sales folks who referred to Class A motorhomes as "mobile homes". Big difference. And a car sales guy who tried to sell us a Hyundai "Tuck sun". You know - - "Tuck sun" like the city in Arizona. (No; didn't buy from either one.)

There's no substitute for doing your own research.

Trust a salesperson who says: "I don't know the answer to that, but I'll certainly find out for you". An engineer might know everything about a MH you could possibly ask about, but a salesperson who has ALL the answers is probably lying.

Trust your gut... if it doesn't FEEL right...

The Problem with
Trust Your Gut
Is
So few people have one, yet everyone thinks theirs(existant or not) is infallible.

A certain video personality refers to a Thor Axis as the "Access". There's no substitute for "attention to detail"... you either practice it or you don't.

At the end of the day, the sales guy is just doing his job, lying or not. No one is forcing you to sign on the dotted line. If you agree to their terms, then well, you agreed to their terms. So many people complain afterward but really whose fault is it.

Hey Gritz,
Didn't you come up with the phrase "Sales Goobers" to describe them?

Completely agree! Getting fuzzed up about salesmen is like getting mad at mosquitoes- they’re just doing what they do. Do your own inspections and research and if you don’t know how bring an experienced RVer along with you when shopping.

I did...and still do. I actually typed that word in the above post but decided to be nice and stay on subject. All of these posts say the same thing and Smokey Bear said it best...only YOU can prevent a forest fire!!
