Satellite Service Providers

We have started to travel outside the US, generally into Canada where data costs are very high and thinking about getting a satellite service to keep in touch. Has anyone done this and how successful has it been, both in cost and quality? We would be getting a portable unit so that we can disconnect from our FIOS service at home and use it there.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Not sure if this covers your concerns, but these people have done a lot of research on staying connected.
