Shore power to generator

I wanting to keep my RV plugged into shore power. So monthly I'm suppose to start the generator and put a load on it(start the AC). Do I need to unplug shore power or does it matter?

Since unplugging is so easy: I do it!

When you start the generator, the ATS will switch off shore power automatically and apply generator power to the main circuit breaker(s) after a small delay to let the generator's frequency to stabilize. When you stop the generator, the shore power will automatically applied. That said, you should never switch power sources when there is a heavy load on the system (A/Cs). Lights, charger and TVs are ok.

So the generator is prioritized?

In most cases, yes.

When I exercise the generator I just turn off the shore power breaker in the garage, start and run the generator under load, shut down the generator and then turn on the shore power breaker. Since I walk past the breaker box anyway it a simple task to turn the breaker on or off.

Speaking of unplugging: does anybody know where you can buy a protective "box" that would enclose the ends of two 30 amp cables?

Try a search for water proof electrical connection box.

Same here. I have to pass the plug to get to the coach.

Be sure to turn of the load before shutting furnace generator.

That didn’t make any sense...... I meant to say turn off the load before shutting down generator.

Stupid question regarding Gen/shore power

I'm in the middle of a major freeze here in Texas, and keep getting power glitches on shore power. I want to switch to gen power, but not sure whether it will prevail over the shore power if both on.

Yes, I know I could just go out and unplug but it is sleeting, 19 degrees and blowing 28mph.

The generator takes precedence over SP if both are available to the ATS.

And the plus to leaving SP plugged in when running the generator, IF the generator fails or gives you trouble the SP will come back on. All w/o going outside.

When I'm plugged into SP. I start the generator and let the transfer switch take care of it.
