Long ago before my wife and I got a DOD ID I took my grandsons to Ft Bragg. I signed in like everyone else but was pulled to the side like no one else. Within 5-6 minutes they knew I had a CWP. They confirmed with me and asked where the weapon was. I told them home. She said I believe you so go pick up your pass. I asked (smiling) what if she did not believe me. At that point one of the male MPs would pat me down while she and another searched my vehicle. She said you would have chance if saying you had one to turn around and leave. You could return after stopping at a pawn shop that would hold it for you for a small fee while you were on the post.

When I was still working, my job required me to fly often. I had a current KTN "Known Traveler Number". On one flight my travel agency didn't relay my KTN or something else got messed up where I had to go through regular security instead of the much faster and easier TSA Pre.

As I was standing in the long line waiting on my turn, a TSA agent approached me and asked me to get into the TSA Pre line. I thought wow, They are going to let me go TSA Pre anyway. I should have known better.
About half way down the line two more TSA agents met up with me and my TSA escort and informed me they were going to do a swab test on me.
I told them, that's fine with me.
They did a swab test on one of my hands. It was positive. One of the TSA agents that performed the swab test on me got on his radio and requested backup.

I had already figured out what they found on my skin but I kept my mouth shut.
I was escorted to a room with no windows and with one chair sitting in the middle. I was told to sit down while other TSA agents arrived.
Two more TSA agents arrive. Now I have five TSA agents in the room with me.

One of the TSA agents starts putting on latex gloves so I break my silence. At the time, I was a very avid shooter and reloader. I had reloaded about 1000 rds of 45 acp the afternoon before. So I spilled the beans. I told them that I figure their swab tested positive for gunpowder and explained about my shooting and reloading habits. I said, you are welcome to check anything that I have but we ain't gonna do no cavity search.

The TSA agent that had put the latex gloves on chuckled and told me this happens from time to time and he needed to check my carry on bag.
So I start conversing with them. I explained that I had washed my hands with dish washing liquid after my reloading session the day before and had then taken a shower.
He told me that gunpowder would show up on a swab test for a couple days after handling gunpowder even after washing.

It was kinda scary at first but they let me go after going through my carry on. I didn't have any check luggage since I was just going on an overnighter.

What I never figured out is how they zeroed in on me in a security line.

All things considered I would still rather pay a fine and maybe have my gun confiscated for shooting and killing a would be robber/murderer than to be burying my wife or her burying me.

The how may not be as important as the why. What if you'd been somebody else?
