I leave mine plugged into the cord when I leave. I unplug it before plugging it in at next use. Kinda hard to forget to use it.

We had the hard wired Progressive in our DP for 13 years but decided to go with the portable Hughes Bulldog on the Class C.

I was wondering what folks are using to secure the portable. Getting ready for a trip and might need to purchase something like a locking cable. There is a tab on the Bulldog for a small cable.

Been going to campgrounds for 40 years. I’ve never had anything stolen. I never lock anything.

I bought a bicycle cable with lock. It is long enough to go around the pedestal. I just run the cable through the locking ring on my surge protector and through the handle of my 30 amp cord before I loop it around the pedestal that way the surge protector is attached to my 30 amp cable and pedestal.

AFTER it gave me the go ahead I then leveled and finished setting up. I did like the hardwired, one less thing to drag out, but wanted to try the portable this time.

Just a note. Surge Guard is a brand just like Progressive Industries, Watch Dog and some other. Surge Guard makes surge protectors and EMS. Get the EMS for better protection.
Now, if it is hardwired, a simple way to connect is to have the RV main breaker 'off', plug in the shore cable and let whatever EMS system you have do its thing and when it is finished checking the supply and it tells you that you are good to go, then you can turn 'on' the main breaker to clean power.
Just remember to do a "hot skin" check once your main breaker is 'on' cuz I do not believe any EMS would know if there is a problem "downstream" from it.!!

When I had a portable I used an old chrome Harley Davidson exhaust pipe clamp around the cord part of the EMS and then a stout chain and a padlock. It (the lock)was too much trouble though and I hardly ever used it. When we bought our new coach I opted to instal a permanent unit. I test my outlet upon arrival with one of these plugged into a puck style 30A adapter.

As do I. I also added a cheap voltage display. I can quickly check the wiring of the pedestal for miswired, open ground, voltage before I plug in my MH.

I do as well. I have a plug in voltmeter in the bathroom all the time. It’s interesting to see how the voltage varies during the day. It’s also a perfect night light.

Been using portables for 12 years and never had one stolen. Haven't had anything stolen from a camp site in the time we've been RV'ing.

An individual in a campsite next to us a few nights ago had his PD EMS secured to the distal with a chain and lock.

Keeps the honest people from taking it... thieves will take the whole pedestal if/when they want it.

I have the same 50 amp Surge Protector I bought when we got the first 50 amp 5th Wheel 20 some years back

Tuscany came standard with a great EMS however i learned many years ago to:

Check the pedestal prior to setting up and the portable is stored with the power cord reel and ready to use as a tester

Place it back their for next time

I only worry about the "honest" criminals: you really can't do a lot about the other ones...
