If I was to buy one it would be the Watch Dog by Hughes Autoformers. New kid on the block and Bluetooth enabled. The other two companies have been bought and sold and do not have the reputation they one had.

Progressive EMS.
They come in 50 and 30 amp models.
And you can also get either plug-in, or hard-wired versions

To add to what's been said, I recommend an EMS, Electrical Management System, not just a surge guard. Lots of posts that differentiate the 2.

I use a progressive surge protector. On this last trip, we stopped overnight in Las Vegas New Mexico. A storm came through that afternoon and into the evening. The storm caused the power at the pole to go low and my surge protector did it's job since the power went into low voltage. It stopped the power to my motor home each time the power dropped. Once the power came back up, it checked the supply and allowed the correct amount to energize my coach.

I, too, have the Watch Dog by Hughes Autoformers. I decided on the hard wired version so that there was one less thing to keep track of. Installed in about an hour. Love the Bluetooth connectivity. No need to find a place to mount another display.

They come in both 30 and 50 amp flavors.

Another shout out for Progressive Industries EMS. I bought the hard-wired 30amp version 4 years ago for a trailer, and have since transferred it to our motorhome.

Just a point of thought, I purchased a 50amp Progressive Industries plug in model. It did it's job well by protecting my MH. The device itself was toast but was immediately replaced by the manufacturer.

My original thought was to buy a hardwired model and I'm glad I didn't.

To unwire it and temporarily bypass it as opposed to just unplugging it and plugging in while I waited for the replacement was definitely worth it.

But that is just my humble opinion.

On our latest 30 day trip,, I ran into low voltage at the pedestal due to a rain and lightening storm near the campground. My Progressive 30 amp pedestal unit did it's job and shut the power down every time the power dipped. At first I thought it was just our pedestal but after I talked to one of the camp ground host, it was the entire r v campground electrical system issue as a result of the storm. I checked my unit and it gave me the low voltage message before cycling through and turning back on. This was in Las Vegas New Mexico(beautiful KOA Campground facility).

The hard wired unit has a bypass switch. I dont know if it will bypass if fried but I'm im thinking it would. Usually the circuit board is what fries. But fortunately I've never had this problem

The Hughs Autoformer Watchdog will still continue to protect the MH in the event the surge protector is used up. Hughes will replace the surge module once for free if it gets fried in the first two years. They are simple to replace. Works for me!

Portable or hardwired, it doesn’t make a difference at all. They do the same thing. One is not better than the other. Buy the version you can afford and if it is portable use it.

Been using a 50 amp portable for ten years with no, repeat, no issues. It has caught issues at 2 or 3 pedestals when plugging in.

Don't have to remember to use it, if it is hardwired. Just sayin'.

I went with a portable PI EMS this time around because I wanted to test the pedestal before I dragged everything out and set up. Last summer with the hardwired PI EMS, it detected the ground fault but I was half way setup. Like today, I pulled it out first and plugged it in. AFTER it gave me the go ahead I then leveled and finished setting up. I did like the hardwired, one less thing to drag out, but wanted to try the portable this time.

Just a note. Surge Guard is a brand just like Progressive Industries, Watch Dog and some other. Surge Guard makes surge protectors and EMS. Get the EMS for better protection.

Or when it’s stored with the rolled up cable.
