I've got a new Vegas and I'm just getting around to checking tire pressure. Checking the pressure on the dualies is a challenge. For the inner tire there is an extender hose with a Presta valve mounted in a clamp attached to the rim (see photo). There doesn't seem to be enough of the valve extended outside of the clamp bracket to get a tire pressure gauge to work and I'm sure I won't be able to put any air in it either. Have any of you dealt with this and what have you done? Many thanks for any help.

I had problems with those type valves, also. FINALLY, I got some 6" solid extenders and JOY. They say you need to have a metal valve stem on your tire and I did so they went right on and now I can check and adjust air pressure. If I hadn't had metal valve stems on the inside tires I would have paid a tire shop to replace them.

You'll need an air compressor for the road eventually....the Viair is specifically designed for this and has all the attachments. I bought the Model 400-RV.

tire pressure

Go ONLY by what your RV says on the tire pressure sticker... everything depends on GVW on the axles for your specific year and model.

I respectfully disagree with this. I think you should rely entirely on the TIRE manufacturer’s recommendation using the SPECIFIC TIRE MODEL PRESSURE CHART available online. The motor home sticker is correct for the factory installed tires at the vehicle’s maximum GVWR. If you are at a different weight or have different brand or model tires the recommended pressure can be several pounds different. That said you won’t hurt anything relying on the Thor sticker.

tire pressure

When I bought tires at Goodyear the tires say 90PSI they put in the pressure on the sticker which is 85 for the duals and 85 for the single. They just told me to check the pressure cold.

So, what is the consensus on the tire pressure? My door sticker says 75 front and 65 rear? My tires are stamped 80 max.

Are you sure your door sticker says 65 rear?

They do say that the memory is the second thing to go!

And I've already forgotten what the first one was!

The pressure stamped on the tire is maximum for the tire. That is the tested pressure that the tire manufacturer recommends you never go above regardless of the vehicle it is mounted on. The sticker from the vehicle manufacturer is what you go by.

Weigh your RV then go to your tire manufacturer's website, find the RV weight loading chart and look up the tire pressure based on your units weight.

Lt Keefer said it very simply and correct. The tire manufacturer has no idea what you will put these tires on...single rear wheel, dual real wheel, etc. the chassis manufacturer does know...go by the sticker in the door. Insurance companies will in the event of a serious accident that could possibly be blamed on tires....and they DO look.

I agree with the vehicle manufacturers recommended pressure. I have done that for many years. My sticker says 67 front and 62 rear so thats what I do. Tires say 70.

Bob, Don't worry about remembering what the first one is, when it happens you will know.

This is probably the wisest course of action...

Sam,
I just like to know what I'm missing!

The Thor sticker is the correct tire pressure for the original equipment tires at the RVs GVWR (maximum allowed weight). If your particular machine weighs less than that you might find a better ride at a pound or two lower. You really should weigh front and rear (or better, each corner separately) and then look up the tire manufacturers recommendation for that weight and configuration (front single rear or dually rear). It’s the only way to get it specifically right. Different tire brands and models can be different. If all that is too much work just follow the Thor sticker.

I'd say those are your best starting points...
Just take a peek at the tire sidewalls, and check what the maximum tire pressure allowed is also.

Max is 80 on the tire sidewall. I will start at the recommended sticker pressures and monitor the ride and look for any wear. Had the tires balanced at discount tire and bought the replacement certificates that include free replacement and lifetime balancing and rotation. They claim that they can rotate the tires and this shop does a lot of RV work with all the snowbirds we get here. I always watch my tires and wear patterns.
