Cheap Propane at Tractor Supply

I just Tractor Supply - it was quick, easy and only $2.79 / gal. I highly recommend

Cheap is kinda relative.
What's the price of propane in the area surrounding that tractor supply?

I just paid 2 bucks a gallon. It's $3.29 at the circleK
Mine is a local deal for local patrons of the local gas station.
Relative.

You're correct, and in my location Tractor Supply has the cheapest propane. Reports from various places around the country list Tractor Supply as the cheapest local propane supplier as well.

I tried to use them once, but found that there tank and hose was WITHIN the fenced area, where me and my toad could not enter, then back out... they could not reach or feed the hose thru the fence to accommodate me, even though I was able to pull right up beside were the tank and hose are.

Went to an rv park and paid $3.75.

Yep, ours is in a fenced area as well but since it's local I usually fill without the toad. Their RV parking spots are right across from the gate entrance so the one time I did have a toad it was easy to just drop it in the RV parking space, pull in to fill, and then back the MH right back up to the toad to reconnect it.

Just filled up at a CA Costco
Very few Costco’s offer propane
$2.49

I struggle with the propane gauge
Once filled, it never shows F
It seems to show 2/3 for a very short time, then 1/3 until an E

Anyone here use a different gauge?

BTW...it took 7.8 gal, but showed E on gauge

80% Rule

Seems like I remember reading somewhere that by law they can only fill a propane tank to 80% capacity to allow for expansion.

Cheaper Propane

I get my propane from Costco. Last time it was $1.70/gal. Currently $1.78/gal.
We joined Costco simply because their car insurance was 1/2 anyone else in town. The savings more than pays for the membership. We can't get their homeowners insurance because we live too close to the ocean. You have to be
5 miles from the ocean to qualify.

I only fill once a uear so the price of propane is of no concern to me. I use the local propane company where an old AF buddy works. They have easy in and out as the location is an old filling station from days gone by. If I save a dollar on something I buy once a year it doesn't register. Now gasoline is a different matter.

I've been using alot more propane this past year because of boon-docking (Refrigerator runs on propane)
Also, we've been using the propane furnace and propane hot water for showers
I do not use for BBQ (yet, until I add a connection)

So I went thru 7.8 gal in 6 months.
Technically, the on-board tank holds 75-80% of 40 Pounds = 9.4 gal

But like I said above...I had 1.6 gal remaining in the tank prior to fill and it registered empty.

Yes, they usually are the cheapest in the area. BUT, check out where their tank fill station is located.

The one closest to me is just inside the chain-link gate leading to their outdoor/garden area. I cannot pull my MH in forward, because the LP fill would be on the wrong side. I have to wait for the clerk to open the gate, then, I back in almost all the way, because the LP on the MH is the first compartment behind the driver.

Bretz RV in Boise sells propane for .99 per gallon in RV season, $1.99 in winter.

On the road look for less than $3. Fillup yesterday $2.55 in Benson, AZ.

Thanks for the postings. I never worried when I had my fifth wheel. Now with the big propane tank I need to pay attention. We do not have a Tractor Supply near us, but need to start looking a head of time. So now another thing to add to my to do list. I live in California so it still will not be cheep. the state taxes the bejeebers out of fuel.

It's the law they can't separate themselves from the dispensing tank/shut off area by a fence. If something went wrong...it could be a serious issue if he had to run around the fence to get back to the RV or vice versa.

Sadly, we're not retired and can't get out enough to need refilling the rig propane tanke more than once a year - which I usually have done at dealership when I have it winterized (yes, I'm lazy....). That way, we have a full tank if we get an ice storm and lose power, and need the RV as a "lifeboat".

That said, I grill. A lot. Year round. And keep multiple spare propane tanks. For refilling 20# tanks in our area, I have found that the local Tractor Supply or Ace Hardware affiliates are usually considerably cheaper than other options. Right now, my local Ace is advertising a 20# tank refill for $9.99. Tempted to go buy another tank......

In my part time gig for the local True Value Hardware we fill propane. (It's where I fill my rig) Regards to the 80% capacity the guy/gal filling your Motorhome tank can't fill it past 80% even if they wanted to. There is a vent valve that is opened on your tank while filling that starts spitting LPG when the tank reaches the fill (80%) mark. If you don't open the vent and allow the air to purge while filling the pressure difference won't allow much more than 60%-70% fill.
Disclaimer your results at other propane facilities may very

Thanks for posting about this. We left Silver City, NM a few days ago and needed to get our built in tank filled. Departure was a saturday, meaning most propane companies were going to be closed. I remembered your post about this, and that’s where we went. You post meant we didn’t have to pack up and unhook and go fill a day before we were ready.

I get mine at an odd place. Anyone ever try U-Haul? I was there without an RV asking about their services for a possible toad when I saw the big tank and asked how much was the propane? They have special RV / Vehicle use of $1.99. They have loop around circle so it is easy to pull right up. They fill it up. I have never been low nor have I ever got more than 7 gallons because I normally fill up on my way out regardless of how much I may have. We have lp gas heat, lp gas hot water, lp gas stove / oven.

I believe my tank holes 18 gallons capacity or 76 lbs.

I should point out that it is a full service U Haul facility that happens to be down the street from where we live. They say a lot of people replace their portable tanks with exchanges, but they don't be completely empty. They don't do exchanges but they only charge what is needed to fill the tank. I have never done that and I suspect the rate may different to refill existing tank? I just swap with Academy Sports and call it a day.
