Toad Braking System
Good morning peeps!
We need your input. We traded our standard trans. toad for a Chevy Equinox. In doing so we had to purchase a braking system. We bought the Brake Buddy Elite 3. Twice the brakes on the Equinox locked up while we were towing. We sent the Brake Buddy back and they tell us there is nothing wrong with it. Has anyone else had this problem? What braking system do you use and are you happy with yours? Y'all are always full of information and we appreciate your input. Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with a different system which most likely was caused by the brake’s battery not being properly charged resulting in a false break away signal. In my case, I did not understand the proper method to charge the internal battery after a long period of storage. I don’t know if the Brake Buddy has an internal battery but you might check into it.

I have never used a Brake Buddy. We have the RoadMaster InvisiBrake installed on our Grand Cherokee. Since the RoadMaster regional rep came to the house and corrected the issues Camping World caused with the installation we are extremely happy with it. No setup reguired. All I do is after connecting the TOAD I power up the brake monitor in the coach and away we go.
Brakes locking for no reason during a tow is not a good thing.

I also have the RVI3 for about 5 - 6 months. Runs good a.d the only problem was the TBC+ (Towed Battery Charger3), which was defective. RVI, shipped out a new unit, all is well.

We use a Stay in Play on our Wrangler as I wanted the convenience of a permanently installed system. Just flip a switch and you’re ready to go. So far it has worked perfectly. Was not difficult to self install and would not be difficult to remove if I ever sell the car. I recommend it.

I also have an RVi3. It stood out when I did the research. Works great so far towing a Jeep Wrangler.

We have the Patriot by Blue Ox … we had a chance to pickup a trade in at half price, when we set the Jeep up for towing...All has been good..the Patriot is a bit of a beast in size, but works well.

We tow a 2018 Equinox 4 down and I'd have to check the brand, but it is a permanent installation with the cylinder attached to the brake pedal. It is an adjustable surge brake because the brakes on the Equinox are very touchy. We also have the onboard charger from the MH because the Equinox has a pretty good battery draw while towing and will run the battery dead. Even with the charger the battery will die on long trips if you don't remember to get everything turned off. We've towed it about 6000 miles so far and it tows very well.
If you're interested in all the details you can call Dan's Service Center in Elkhart, Indiana and ask either Ryan or Nate. Great place for service and information.

I think a toad battery charger is pretty much essential. Certainly no downside to having one.

Had a US Gear proportional braking system installed on a previous DP, towing a Chevy HHR, Used that for many years, never had a problem with it. Had the system transferred to the Gemini, worked well there too, but just wasn't comfortable towing with the Gemini, so did not very often or for long distances. I know others that have that system, know of no issues or problems anyone has had with it. They are not inexpensive to buy or have installed, but it does work well.

We have an Invisibrake on our ACE and Cherokee toad, plug it in and go.
We had a problem with our Invisibrake control box. Pump went bad. Roadmaster rebuilt the unit and so far no new issues.
The Invisbrake has a toad battery charge system. You turn on the MH parking lights to energize the charge pin on the plug. Only issue I have with this is the ACE has no warning bell to remind you the lights are on. I put a twist tie pipe cleaner around the steering wheel to remind me the lights are on. Eventually I may get accustomed to checking the headlight switch is off or maybe not

I also have the Invisibrake and it’s worked flawlessly since I installed it three years and 17,000 miles ago. But, like you, I’ve struggled with remembering to turn off my lights when I park my Challenger. Not an issue with the Invisibrake, but with the Challenger’s lack of a buzzer/alarm to alert you that you left your lights on.

Very easy to rig one. Buzzer or chime on Amazon for a couple of bucks and a relay from Auto Zone. You can pick up both the ignition on signal and the lights on signal from the mirror heat switch.
