Toilet chemicals when using sewer hookup

This is bound to be a dumb question, but when using a site where you have a sewer hookup do you still add chemicals to the toilet?

I actually wait until I drain the tank for the final time, and I add it to the tank with a couple gallons of water...

Even with full hookups black tank doesn’t get emptied until it is 2/3 full, so yes you still use whatever you use.

I use Happy Camper after each time I dump. I also will add it to the gray tank at the end of the trip. I have found that it will break the TP down and also eliminate the smell. If you ever had to change a black or gray water valve, you do not want the smell. Especially form the gray tank. Don't ask me why I know. By the way I have found that Amazon's Presto TP to be the best at comfort and breaking down. We have used any TP before so long as it was septic tank safe and used Happy Camper. The only time I had the big almost clogged drain was when I forgot to add Happy Camper.

I only use toilet chemicals when the wife says she thinks it smells. That happens once or twice a year. Most of the time though, I go chem free. Been doing this since the 1980s and never had a problem. I use Thetford stuff when I do use it though.

Presta ultra soft plush and thick? Isn't RV TP supposed to be single ply and harsh?

Can't stress enough that even with full hookups:

Keep the black valve closed until at least 2/3 full. Do NOT leave the black tank valve open.

Everything is conditional:

Normal use (at track up to 3 consequitive weekends), empty every 3 to 4 weeks depending on amount of nights staying over at track using treatment for black. I let gray level climb to rinse hoses after empty black.

Parked at campground or Disney, leave gray open until day before leaving. Black stays closed until 2/3 on panel. Then if needed, water added for final empty then rinse hoses with gray after final empty.

I use treatment except when parked at campground or Disney.

Should unit not be used for 2 weeks, I add water (1 bowl full) while warming engine and exercising generator. Never let black go dry, I did that once.

Leaving the black tank open is a sure recipe for making your coach smell like a sewer!

Leaving holding tank open

Based on your question, I am assuming you are leaving your tanks open. I don’t recommend that. Let your tanks fill at least 3/4 before flushing. Based on when I first started camping years ago (learn as you go method) the solids have a tendency to accumulate in a pile and will require intensive clean out when leaving the tanks open on full hookup.

If that is a false assumption, I will still recommend using treatment while hooked up.

Lot's of good advice here. Sometimes it also depends on your travel plans. For instance, if I'm staying at a place with sewer hookup for only a day or two before going on to the next stop, I will not dump black tank until I get to the next place assuming sewer hookup or dump station will be available. I find the a day of driving does a great job of breaking down all solids because of the water movement. And if I know I have room, I will always add extra water to the black tank. I've never had a problem.

Red face

Waste treatment is an individual "thing" depending on how often used, how used, and by whom. To be on the safe side, any protection is better than none. And all toilet additives do not have to be chemicals. There are several natural additives that work just as well.

Yes you need chemicals and when hooked to sewer be sure to keep the black tank closed until it needs empty. If not you end up with what some call a “shit tree”

The water drains and the shit piles up gets hard and is a real issue to remove.
