Another thread where there is no single right answer and any justification of either side not based on physical requirements is just a "feel good for me" answer.

I ride both sides of the fence and sometimes straddle it.

When driving the RV and pulling the toad I travel 63-65 mph, mostly in the right lane - Why? Towing my toad limits me to 65 mph steady state. I will push it to 75 mph to pass or clear rolling road blocks.

When driving my 4 wheeler I travel 80 mph on cruise control and follow two simple rules:
Slower traffic keep right
Keep right except to pass
Why? I travel a lot on interstates for both my job and to take care of my father who lives 3 hours away. Time traveling is wasted time and wasted time is wasted money. I try to minimize wasted money.

When driving the MH without a toad I usually cruise at 70 mph in the right lane, changing lanes as necessary to pass and provide space for merging traffic. Why? I'm not in the "working" mindset, 70 mph is the speed limit and if I go faster my mpg goes down exponentially. Actually cruising at 70 mph without a toad gives me a lower mpg than 65 mph with a toad.

Those that claim you have to go faster to "keep up with the flow of traffic and prevent being an obstacle to faster moving traffic" are just trying to justify their lead foot. Many 18 wheelers are governed to 65 mph, some limp along much slower than that (passed one doing 50 mph yesterday). The problem is not the difference in speed between the rabbits doing 85 mph and the turtles going 65 mph: the problem is the drivers that are too lazy or incompetent to follow the rules of traffic. This includes the left-lane Louies, the truck drivers who hang out in the middle lane, and the drivers who are completely unaware of the traffic around them. Not to mention the drivers who are trying to "cell phone" while driving even though that is illegal in my state. If you say "I just get on the interstate and stay in the ______ lane because (whatever justification they provide)" than maybe you need to rethink your driving skills. If you don't feel comfortable changing lanes as needed than maybe you need to restrict your driving to 2 lane highways and stay off the interstates. Some people do that anyway because they prefer that type of driving and the more varied view.

Ted,
I'll buy that.

Thanks.
There is no right answer except obligation and skill.
When traffic south of slc was doing 85mph and traffic was tightening up we got off the 15n and found a smaller road. My skill was close to exceeded and my obligation was met.
40 miles out of my way, but easier on everyone.
And
We had lunch at Beaver Taco.

Well Bill I disagree with you on this one. In Ca I drive 58ish. Out of Ca I drive 63-65. Why, not because I dont have the skill but because the mh just purrs along at this speed and I'm just not in that much of a hurry.

You can not make the statement that everyone lacks the ability to drive faster just because the limit is higher. Some probably are afraid to go faster but thats something neither you nor I could know just by driving by them

People drive at different speeds that's why there are fast and slow lanes

I agree.
You are correct: some vehicles just have a "sweet spot"; where they are most comfortable being driven...
My little Smart likes 50 mph.
The Tiffin seems to settle in at 55 mph
The Missus' Escape seems to like 65 mph.

That is definitely true about the sweet spot... my coach likes right around 62 or weirdly enough 72. Right in between the wind seems to hit it just right on the overhang that has a noticeable whistle. The exhaust drone seem to hit right in the 63 to 67 zone. So depending on the speed limit I may be going slightly under or over the limit. Nothing to do with skill just a more pleasurable drive. Obviously road conditions can always necessitate changes.

I enjoy standing directly in front of the elevator door. It brings me pleasure. Others can find a way around me.

(my 70 1/2 z28 had a sweet spot. It was 1850rpm...the same place resonance hits a 350 LT1 like you threw a balancer weight. Stupid car. Almost impossible to do 55mph which was also 1850 so 55mph was 3rd gear to not have your teeth vibrated.)

The rv would do it, but I'm just not too keen at those speeds.

SLC is terrible to drive a coach through they are nuts. I would rather drive in LA. At least there is a reason why it’s crazy there is 20 million people on the road.

That road 15s was so bad we lost a fender flare and there must have been 20 cars along the road with busted tires and they were still doing 75mph.
We bailed and got into a little town and then a little road and then a bigger road.

Oklahoma city.
The 40 has been under construction since my first trip there in 1976.
I hate that stretch.

Anyone remember Phoenix when the 10 stopped south of town and picked up east of town?
We just gave up once and spent the night.

I just drive my rig and enjoy the journey. Sweet spot is 68 for the rig and me.

However If your main concern is not to offend or inconvenience the other drivers you are working way too hard.

I wasn’t in phx when the 10 wasn’t complete but I was living there when the 51 wasn’t complete. I remember rushing to get on at camelback road going as fast as you can to thunderbird and waiting for ever as maybe 5 or 10 cars made it through the light at the off ramp.

Is that what that snarly route on 100 and 101 were all about (think those numbers are right)?

Yeah it’s the one that comes up from the 10 down by the tunnel and connects to the 101 by desert ridge

My MH won't do 85 under power, the speed limiter kicks in about 77 - 78 mph. Don't ask me how I know. My Silverado speed limiter kicks in about 88 mph. That's a pain sometimes as that 5.3 liter will do well above that.

My 2005 Scion Xb (yes, the toaster) topped out about 110 mph and had no speed limiter.

The. Siverado may have been limited that low due to the OEM tires...
(I had a 2000 2500 HD with tires only rated for about that...)

Our ACE has tires that are rated for 75 maximum sustained speed, yes I have been a bit over that for short distances. For me about 63-65 is a nice speed for the V-10 and 5 speed, fast enough and comfortable to drive.
My problem is my wife who also drives and has no concept of 12 1/2 feet tall and 18,000 pound vehicle. That and she thinks the speed limit means minimum not maximum speed. My "white knuckle" time is when she is driving and when she is not I keep hearing "how fast are you going." Love her to death but she sucks all the enjoyment out of a trip. Jim.

So the question becomes: "How do you get her share of the driving cut back a bit; without hurting her feelings?"
