Towing and Brakes

Has anyone heard that towing a vehicle places stress and wear on the brakes of the vehicle being towed? I think I’m being ripped at the dealership for a brake job on our Equinox. Thanks in advance [emoji106]

Does the term, "bovine fecal matter" mean anything to you?

If the supplemental braking system is not adjusted correctly, yes it can cause problems.

Agree with Bob - ask them to show you the old parts. If it’s a quality shop they will. Hopefully not just a set from an old Buick they keep handy to show customers. It is possible that towing could wear the brakes if the towed brakes are poorly set up. But I think you’d notice when driving if the brakes were dragging.

It might also be the system you are using to apply the towed vehicle's brakes not being adjusted properly. It may be applying pressure to the brake pedal the entire time it is being towed.

If you supplemental braking system is properly set up there should be no additional wear and the brakes should last a normal length of time. I have been towing a 2011 CR-V for 10 years behind two different coaches and the brakes show normal wear for 60,000 miles. Most of our miles are open road and the brakes are probably the least used part of the set up.

How many miles on your Equinox? How many additional miles has it been towed? Towing should not add any additional wear on the brakes if the brake controller is properly adjusted. Which braking system do you use on the Equinox?
