Otherwise yes, the generator for a 56 Chevy was transported in my class c storage compartment from Virginia to St. Louis with no issues.

I'm going out on a limb and guessing you're talking about transporting a portable inverter type generator, like a Honda or Champion. And you would use this typically like someone with a travel trailer would? In which case I see no issues... just use common sense principles regarding exhaust fumes - like keeping it some distance away from open compartments when running.

I carry a Honda 2000 often in the rear, left storage bin with a 5 gallon jug of gas...never had an issue. I use it when Harvest Hosting, at longer than lunch stops at rest areas and other places where I only need microwave or other small load needs, and to keep fridge and batteries going. On longer trips, I carry a Champion 3400 on the rear hitch rack with 2 each 5 gallon jugs. I protect it from the elements with the factory cover. This will run one A/C if necessary and I don't need to set it on the ground. I live by the rule "one is none, two is one". I also have dual Honda 2000's with the parallel kit and extended run fuel tank, as well as two Champion 3400's with the parallel kit that will put out 6800W together. We use different setups for race weekends depending on the needs. If you carry gas jugs on the outside (in the sun) drill a very fine, micro size hole in the top of the carry handle and this will prevent expanding of the tank but the hole is small enough it will not degrade gas quality...just enough for the jug to "breath".

Be a guy and carry a sound shield with you.
No one within 100yards appreciates these stand alone generators running.
A guard is as easy as those foam 2" thick panels hardware stores sell.

Just a hint as to how to fit in at campgrounds.
(I've seen signs banning them at some municipal parks)

You can't hear these generators any more than the ones that come with the coach. They are inverter style...most MH generators are not.

The one above is a bit over the the top but with the number of youtube videos about inverter quiet boxes, from the simple sheets I suggested all the way up to the link and with real testing and sound meters and such, I'll say it's a thing considerate people consider.

Are you saying your RV's genset is too loud; so you have multiple quiet portable alternatives based on travel destinations?

I transported my portable 3500 once, but it was to take on trip where I wanted to clear some land with an electric chainsaw. I didn't carry a gas can in favor of getting gas once I reached my destination.

I know there are valid reasons to carry a portable generator in RV, but you seem to have some other driver that I am not sure I follow?

My assumptions of valid reasons in no particular order.

1. RV's genset is too loud
2. RV's genset does not work (or not reliable)
3. To optimize gas ( so as to save money and/or stay longer)
4. For needed portability once destination reached
5. ???

I’m scratching my head wondering why you would need an additional portable generator when you already have one onboard. Similar to the people who won’t use their onboard toilet. Or those that put TP in a trash can instead of flushing it down. Could’ve saved a lot of money by just buying a tent. Am I missing something?

Sure, let's make it official. Your number 6 was part of my optimize gas. I have reworded mine to be clearer.

I was gonna add another if RV'er wanted to be all green but then they would not have the portable generators either

One thing I have never understood from any of the RV forums in 3 1/2 years, why there is so much hate for RV Generators ( the Green Monsters they call them)? I keep mine hidden and locked in rear compartment, it is so quiet people barely know I have it running unless you are sitting right next to the tail pipe at the rear of RV.

I live by the rule "one is none, two is one"

The generator in my coach is the QD6000 Inverter type driven by a water-cooled Kubota diesel engine. Super quiet and efficient. Why run it when all I need to do for a few days is keep batteries charges, fridge going and occasionally a hair dryer or microwave? I post what I've actually practiced, not what I theorize. The OP asked about packing a portable along...I answered him with what I do and why. There's enough posts on here about "generator won't start" or "generator quit running", etc. I will not get caught in that scenario. The portables are quieter than most MH engines, let alone their gas powered onboard generators.
