I bought 3" gel memory foam toppers for our bunk beds and hide-a-bed, it made the bunks very nice, and actually made the hide-a-bed tolerable.

Thanks for replying so quickly.

I have only read and never used one. The gel memory foam is not too hot?

I may get one for the twin upper bed in our Axis. I spent one evening on the air mattress once and was not too comfortable. The grand kids are old enough to stay up there now.

I have been reading about foam density. Does anyone have a suggestion for a medium rather than firm mattress? Any brand...Wal-Mart or sleep shop brand?

Phil

I replaced the air mattress in the drop down bunk with a custom tri-fold foam one. Its 6" thick with 3" memory foam on the top and 3" high density foam on the bottom. Now its the most comfortable mattress in the camper LOL. Picked it up from Foam by Mail.

Granted the 6" of foam is too tall to keep up there all the time (the lip is only about 1"). When the bunk is all the way up the mattress rides in the back...

We like firm mattresses...and I was happy to see/feel the firmness of the twin beds in our 24.1 ... however, I think we will add a 2" topper to soften it a little.
In our B+ Dorado we had, previously, we replaced the hide a bed mattress with a 3 layer foam mattress from Denver Mattress. It was good.
We have not done anything with the overhead bunk up front yet. I suppose we should check it out before we invite one of the grandkids to come along !!

Good info Jamie,

We already have a 6" support in the rear so a 3 inch topper should be pretty comfortable. Do you think three pound density would be ok?

What do you think about a two inch topper for the top bunk for our six year old grandson?

Not sure I can answer either question: You are talking about personal preferences. I may like a higher density vs you. Unfortunately that is the problem with ordering a mattress by mail: you can't test them out first--especially one like foam by mail since the custom orders aren't returnable.

The topper for your grandson may work: Six is old enough to be able to tell you if he likes it or not.

A couple yrs ago, we purchased a 2" topper for our Sleep Number at home...we got it at WalMart...for that exact reason...had no idea if it would feel right...turns out, we returned and bought a different density...
so, in agreement with Jamie...you might want to go to your favorite big box store/super store and buy what you are looking for.

Jamie and vkb,

Do you know what density you bought, 3 lb, 4 lb, 5 lb?

Found my invoice. The mattress I bought was from "Foam N' More"

Here is a link to their foam specs.

Ours was 3" HD23 foam (4th column from the left at the link above) with 3" Memory foam (4.3lb) on top.

I love my foam bed topper. GO to Walmart. buy one you like and cut it down to size yourself. Use your current mattress as your template. that will be the cheapest.

Costco has nice memory foam toppers. We bought two for the twins in our Axis. We love 'em, and the price wasn't too bad. 70 or 80 dollars each, I think.

Regards,

Randy

Wow, nice to be missed!

Work has been crazy - on the road, not in a good way, from just after Christmas until the end of March. Finally back home and getting back to normal.

The Axis is still in storage, snow again this weekend, but I think I'll go check it out the weekend after that and begin the process of getting for our first, as yet unplanned, trip.

Regards,

Randy

Randy,

Sounds like you've got some catching up to do. Do like Jamie and go give your Axis a big hug.
