What is this??

I had squirrels chew some wire cables under my 2016 Axis 24.1 when I went to look originally an empty black corrugated electrical cable was hanging down. I did not find wires in it to my surprise. I just tied it up with knitting twine so it wouldn’t drag. We then left on a 3 week trip and traveled 2400 miles with no ill effects noted.

When I returned home I looked at it carefully and i’m almost sure it was the work of squirrels. I traced the line back to what I thought was a battery but it had the following label on it and seems to be a tank heater - maybe black or grey?

I have never used the tank heaters and I guess I could turn them on and check it out? Are the tank heaters battery powered??

Thanks

Tank heaters are powered by the coach's power center (master fuse panel). They have an internal thermostat and won't power up until the ambient is about 35 F degrees

Wow good luck with it! Tank heaters sound like a good idea. My unit did not come equipped with them. Can they be added??

Yes, electrical tank heaters could be retrofitted if you can get to the bottom of the tanks. On your coach all tanks are heated by the propane cabin heater. About 30% of the propane heat is deflected to the areas surrounding the fresh water, gray water, black water tanks and around all the water lines below the floor. Thor engineers say the water in the coach is in the coach is safe down to 15 F degrees if the heater thermostat is set a 60 degrees or higher.

thanks for posting the temp activation.
do you have any experience in testing the heaters while it is warm?
We are keeping the axis in the lane way until we leave for Florida in January.
Thanks Rick

I assume you will be winterizing the rig as Ontario will freeze before January...
As part of that, the tanks should be drained, and antifreeze added to system (to supply lines unless blowing out with air - which will put some in drains... or directly into drains. The tanks themselves are really no issue - lots of room in a virtually empty tank for expansion... but the line from the tank to the dump valve is what you are adding antifreeze to protect. tank heaters would do little if anything for that.
