What do you dingy tow?

We were told we can’t dingy tow either of our Toyota vehicles, and I just bought a new Tacoma, I may swap it for a Jeep of some type, since we’ve seen people mainly towing jeeps. What do you dingy tow?

If your Tacoma is a 4X4 4 door, I may be interesting in it. My son is aggressively looking for one right now. your question...I will be carrying a 1989 Jeep YJ on a small tandem trailer. Sorted through all the good, bad and ugly of all options and choose my poison.

Just curious as to why don’t you dingy tow it, most all jeeps you can. Toyota claims that you’ll explode the transfer case on theirs due to not circulating the oil through the cooler. Altough you’ could add one to the system with a pump, that’s to much trouble

Truck already set up with integral electric brakes from factory, tow capacity of 10K, more than enough driveline power, there are times I will boondock and can carry portable generators, extra fuel, ladder, smoker/grill, etc. More options for what we will do. IMO, there is just too much drama with the 4 down system. Others love it...not for me.

Couldn't you just throw your Tacoma up on a trailer?

A trailer will add a not insignificant amount of weight with a vehicle that is already up there (4k lbs).

Using an aluminum trailer is an option but a very costly one.

We have the same dilemma, except I have a 2008 Tacoma. The transmission lube pump is an extra 1400.00, and that's if I install it.

I would prefer to tow my Mustang or the wife's AWD escape, but that requires a trailer.

I'm waiting to see if the 2019 Ranger offers the same flat tow option as the F150 4x4. If not, I will probably shop for a used Jeep.

Dingy

I tow a Chevy 2010 HHR in neutral and the key on just enough to unlock steering wheel. If you want to be certain what and how you can tow you must check the owners manual. Do not trust the advice of anybody or the dealer. Cars change all the time and owners manual is the official word.

2014 or older Honda CRV no problems 4 down. We have towed ours 20k miles. After 2014 a CVT trans and no tow.

2011 Honda CR-V. Motorhome magazine produces a annual list of dinghies. It is a good place to start when researching.

Here is the present year tow guide link from Motorhome Mag which is a great magazine. The 2019 guide will be out soon.

Before we purchased a new toad, I did a lot of research for the most preferred vehicle and Jeep won hands down. I purchased a 2015 Jeep Wrangler with automatic transmission...easy to set up and shift back into gear...tows like a dream.

A side note...I purchased a Brake Buddy so I can change vehicles without installing a new brake system in the toad. I also use a Demco Dominator Tow Bar. It's the lightest weight tow bar on the market. Arms articulate individually for easy hook up and don't fall to the ground as you're trying to hook them up. I DO NOT work for them...just love it after fighting my old Roadmaster.

I know this is way more info than you asked but hopefully you can find it useful.

I think you have to consider what you are going to do when you reach your destinations to determine what you tow. I used to tow a small Chevy, but now tow a Jeep Wrangler, because I love to off road in the beautiful southwest where I currently spend my winters. Before, towing the Chevy, we would explore with it, but found that there were a lot of roads/trails/places we could not get to. The Jeep has been no problem getting to these places and the Arizona pinstriping and deep gouges in the tires comes free.

We found a super clean 05 Liberty (DW likes that body style better) to tow. Preps for tow just like the Wrangler, super simple. Added an invis I brake and now hook up is a breeze.

We have been towing our 98 Durango since we got our first MY in 99. A little heavy, but it seats 7, goes off road. Sets up to tow just like a wrangler. Installed M&G Engineering brake system. We have a couple smaller, lighter cars we could tow, but the Durango will haul way more wine.

I am installing both this week to pull a 2013 CRV. Good choice for those reasons
