Of Wire Nuts and Butts
Those of you that have read my post " Transfer Switch Meltdown", will appreciate this. First off, kudo's to Thor. They shipped me a new transfer switch and it arrived in two days. They told me the parts department was closed and would return to work Jan. 2 so the switch wouldn't go out till then. Somebody in customer service must have felt bad for me.
Anyhow, I understand the problem now. Upon inspecting the new switch in the box, the pig tails are pre stripped, leaving the technician to merely pull the insulation off at the pre-cut end and then try to twist the wires together and use a wire nut for fastening, followed by a wrap or two of electrical tape. The problem really becomes obvious when you realize the pig tails were pre stripped perfectly for butt connectors. There is not enough bare wire to simply do a quick twist followed by a wire nut and tape. So my solution to the replacement is butt connectors or if enough slack is available, direct connect with crimp on eyelet connectors.

Is there enough wire and elbow room to throw a soldering pencil into the mix?

The wire nut meltdowns in my transfer switch, IMO were due to stranded wire pigtails being wire nutted to solid copper romex wire. When tighten down on the stranded wire wrapped around the solid wire, the wire nut cuts thru the strands, making a loose connection and less current capacity. I removed the pigtails, connected the romex directly to the switch lugs with a needle nose pliers made round eye. If I had used the stranded pigtail, I would have wet it out with solder first to make it more solid. Much easier though, to remove the pig tails.

Congratulations, I so far have had no issues with THOR and their customer service (knock on wood, fiberglass, and whatever else is available)

Same here regarding Thor Customer Service. I had a water heater circuit board go bad - called Customer Service and received a new one 2 days later. Yesterday, the motor on my entry steps went bad. Once again, call Customer Service and received a new one today (i.e., one day later). In both instances, I did the install myself and sent the defective parts back with Thor's prepaid return label. Every single issue so far has been handled promptly. Can't say enough good things about Thor Customer Service.

They sent me a replacement dinette top without a problem. It got here earlier than I expected.
