Air conditioner repair

My AC unit failed, freon leaked out of a bad crip. It appears that its almost impossible to get a replacement from Coleman. So, my question is, has anyone added a service port to their AC unit for recharging?

Yes, I have read that some have done it.

I haven't done it, but such taps are ready available for R22, but R22 is not readily available any more. The sub is R22 is R410a which is also hard to find in small quantities. You also need a vacuum pump to evacuate the system before recharging.

This is one of those costs as much to fix as replace.
R22 is over $100 a pound, not sure how many pounds...not many.
Plus sum $'s labor.

Might have to change to another brand that is available. Haven't checked lately but a few weeks ago there were some units listed

I still have quite a bit of R22, sounds like I should sell it

On my last coach we installed a piercing valve on the rooftop unit. My neighbor the A/C tech for the local hospital topped off the freon. When he was done you could hang meat in the MH.
But if your unit leaked out all the freon after repairing the leak it will need to be evacuated. I don't think these cheap little compressors have an evac port. They are designed to be thrown away rather than repaired

Sell it.
I made a legitimate crap ton off of some r12 that the people at the auction thought were
Cut rate propane tanks. I think I paid $15 apiece or $15 total.
Imagine 4 tanks of r12.

Sell it.
Buy something nice.

Colman-mac, Domedic, and Atwood also. Far from off-brand.
