Smokey Mountains

Anyone ever take their Sprinter 3500 on Skyline Drive through the Smokeys from VA all the way thru Mary’s tunnel and beyond? A 24st pulling a toad.

Did she get it done ok for you? Thanks.

I’ve driven my 25’ Axis all the way from Pigsah (about mm 420 north to the end in VA mm 0 and further north up Skyline Drive to the end - not all at once, but I do a piece almost every year. It is a beautiful drive and as long as your DW doesn’t freak out over the 1000 foot drops and few guardrails, and you keep to the speed limit and pay attention you will be fine. South of mm 420 there are some low tunnels which I did not want to take my Axis through. North of 420 the tunnels are all high enough for an Axis.

Suggested go around? Not to miss stops along the way? Appreciate it.

As you can see on the map, the three shortest tunnels are from mm 469 to 458. After that they are all tall enough for the Axis - I’m not sure if the height of the Sprinter. Routes 441 and 19 will get you around the tunnels and put you on the Blue Ridge around mm 455 so you only miss about 15 miles. Better than making your RV a convertible.

There are so many places and things to see along the way that it is impossible to list them. Go to nps.gov to download maps and guides. Asheville is a nice several day stop with the Biltmore mansion and great art shops along the river. Excellent NFS campgrounds south of the city and easy access to the Blue Ridge. There are some good books on sights and hikes and waterfalls all along the Blue Ridge. You can spend weeks stopping along the way. Good NP campgrounds, but busy in the summer as is the parkway itself. We usually go in May and early October during the week when there are few crowds.

What's the height of the Citation? I drove our 2006 Gulfstream BTouring Cruiser the entire Parkway and the Skyline Drive. The BT was 10'6" at the top of A/C. Hugged the centerline on a cpl tunnels but really wasn't necessary. The listed height of the tunnels is on the outside edge of the highway.

my 12' high Palazzo had no problems with ANY of the tunnels, no matter what 'height' they are stated - that is the min 'low' point at the very outside of the tunnel, where you obviously can't be driving anyway - stay in the center and you'll be easy.... all the way.

We STARTED at the Cherokee, NC 'end', where the lowest stated tunnels are, and had no issues...

While it is correct that the tunnel height in the middle is significantly higher than the edge, as shown in the table below, it is good to remember that some of the tunnels are quite long and some are curved, so you can not see the other end when you enter. Two large MHs meeting in one if these narrow tunnels and forcing each other to the edge could ruin your whole day. Live dangerously.

My wife and I are going to do this trip From Cherokee to Afton in about two weeks. We are going to take about 5 days and see as much as we can. Does anyone that has made this trip have any suggestion on special places and must see stops? We're driving our Thor ACE 30.3 and staying at KOA's along the route. All of the National Park and State Park camping spots are closed as well as the public rest areas because of the Virus.
