3/4 ton truck Toad?

I looked and didn't see any threads on similar subjects, so...

I have a 2009 Silverado 2500HD (9200# GVWR). It can be flat towed. If my front cap gets fixed, I'd like to start towing a vehicle.

As the GVWR of the truck is close to the max tow cap of my Magnitude, I was wondering if any of you have experience towing a full size truck. If so, thoughts, caveats, concerns?

Any info is helpful.

Thanks!

First question what Magnitude, gas or diesel? Unless you plan on loading the truck to GVWR why worry about that weight. I tow a Ram 1500 at around 5200# and 2500 is probably curb weight around 6000?. If you are a Magnitude on the F550 chassis, no problem. If you are one on the E350 or 450 then maybe a problem. Need more info.

Sorry, I thought the combination of the RV type in my Profile block, my previous posts, and the Super C thread post gave it away. I have a diesel BH35 (F550 6.7L).

The worry about GVWR is that at 9200 lbs, the truck is close to the 10,000 lb tow rating of the Magnitude. I understand that my curb weight is around 5k, but my experience has taught me to always think worst case.

If you're towing a 1500 easily on an XG32, then I feel a lot better, thanks!

This section is C and Super C. You don't have a sig line to see what you drive so I asked. There are "baby Magnitudes" in short 20s length. At any rate you will be fine unless you load it will all the tools and such. Oh and several yards of topsoil. I figure I lost less than 1mpg towing the Ram.

Great, thanks!

Yes, no sig line, but isn't my vehicle showing up to the left?

Maybe on his profile, not below his name. I don't check the profile of every poster to see what's added there. If someone wants specific help they usually add a sig line with the specific information. I'll not weigh in more on this.

EDIT I apologize, they BH35 rolled to next line on my computer and I missed it.

That's a good point, and this should help. Thanks again!

You are well under the hitch capacity and well under the combined tow weight.
The only weight your adding to the coach is the tow bar assembly.
We tow a gm 1500 crew cab and still well with in capacity.

I flat tow my 2500 diesel without a problem. Well, only one problem. The hitch pin broke one time while on the freeway. Safety cables worked perfect, when I applied the brakes and the toad came into the back of the RV, it only dented the ladder. I get asked, all the time, why my ladder is curved. I tell them it's for aerodynamics. I get a lot of blank stares at that.

Also, those of us who use the app on our phone do not see the profile on the left so a signature line or repeating the RV setup is helpful.

Truck toad reply

Look at motor home magazine web site they have a list of all vehicles that can be flat towed.
Do you really want to pull that much weight around?
You gas mileage probably went from 8 to 6 mpg.
We purchased a 2014 Honda CR-V for towing, light weight 3400 pounds and Honda quality.

Mine went from around 11 to 10.5 the last trip and that involved some NC mountain twisties.

You make a good point, and it's one that is factoring into my final decision on what to tow long term. However:

1. The curb weight of my truck is 5260. Not as far off from your CRV as one would think.

2. With CRV's and other efficient vehicles selling for 27-30k used, towing a paid off truck seems to me to be worth the cost in fuel, at least for a while.

3. Most of the stuff we do when RVing is dispersed camping in areas where a four wheel drive vehicle with clearance is a boon. We like to offroad and get into the backcountry. Hard to do with a lot of the popular small toads. When we go long distances and want to tow light, we drag the HOG.

We plan on trying it a few times, and then re-evaluating. Fortunately, almost all of the towing accessories will transfer to a new vehicle, aside from the baseplate and the wiring for the lights.

Yesterday I put a hard folding tonneau cover on the truck. Since the tailgate locks that gives me a relatively secure extra storage area for the inevitable things I want to take. Tools etc. We also do some mild off-roading and having a 4WD capable vehicle enhances our trips. Previous toad was a short wrangler that served that purpose.Iit's sold and I have my truck for that now. Besides I'm not much of a SUV type.
